maybe the wrong forums... chip it?

Postby Daniel-B4 » Fri Apr 29, 2011 5:43 pm

I went and got my car serviced and tried to add Air intake and a BoV.
BoV didnt work at all, made the car stall and backfire.
Air intake made the car run lean and only made 2 more kW's.
They said it might be better to get a chip or new computer.
Anyone have an idea of what i could get or do?

Sounds like a dyno tune would help. The ecu can learn around mods but to get the most out of them a tune is required.
Car(s): Steel Silver MY10 GT Wagon + 1985 Subaru Sherpa

Mods: (GT) HKS Panel Filter. The HKS I put in the MY10 is the same filter I took out of my MY05 GT. So yes, they do fit. Custom leather heel pad to minimise carpet wear in the drivers footwell. Slotted front rotors. (Sherpa) 14'' 6 Spoke mags, Chrome Gear Shift (sick!), Alloy Pedals (sicker!), new positive and negative battery terminals, Alpine cda-9827 H/U, JBL GT 6x9's boxed and mounted (sickest!), Kicker DS650.2 component speakers mounted in the footwells in flibreglass pods, Alpine MRP-F200 4 channel amp (4x40wRMS), Rebadged with hektik chrome eBay badges, STi stickers for more powaaaa, "leather" handbrake boot, recarpetted with grey/black car carpet from Bunnings, sick Clarke Rubber boot mat, polished and waxed.

Air intake will add minimal power, it doesn't really change much that can add power.

What BOV did you add, were you venting it to atmosphere or plumb back? Venting to atmo is not the way to go, it releases measured air into the atmosphere which can confuse the computer momentarily and cause the car to run rich. Plumb back is how they are from stock as it keeps the metered air in the intake and its the way to go IMO.

If it's power you're after get a proper tune and a free flowing exhaust. If you want to empty your pockets for a bit more get some light head work done.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.

its already got a HKS 3 and a 1/2 inch exhaust cat back.
It went on a dyno 3 times while it was there.
123kW without the air intake. 125 with.
BoV was a Blitz and vented atmos.
they said they couldnt get anymore power out of it without a chip or something else.

What are you trying to achieve mate? If you want serious performance go with a V7 sti conversion.. not cheap but you wont look back.

Try amauto in Noosa for the right advice..
Gen1, Gen2, Gen3, Gen4.. No mods, honest...

Instead of posting in your other thread which by the heading was all about a workshop in south brisbane I'll continue the conversation here..

Your exhaust is not going to make your car faster, only louder. If you wanted faster you should have got dump pipes. Given what they cost, it's not even really worth it in a bang-for-buck scenario.

You are simply making a time bomb if you up the boost on a B4.. especially without supporting mods. Apart from all the complicated shit that will ultimately fail on a ten year old example you won't even really get much in the way of results however much you spend.. if you can't live with the lack of power, don't try and improve a flawed system, go single.

Do yourself a huge favour by talking to amauto in noosa and asking for options..

The guys in the following thread have all been through it:

Just curious, I have seen a similar result to this floating around the place, worse on another forum. But that still seems very low for a B4. Is it not boosting on the secondary turbo, or is this just the result of putting a JDM B4 on RON98, with its slightly smaller turbo's. A limp mode of sorts? I imagine a B4 would feel very slow with only 125kw atw... considering the RX makes 115kw (new) and feels very 'meh' to drive.

Also, did you get your car sorted? You were going to come to the Brisbane cruise I believe?

Dude, lay off teh drugs.

the B4 made 125KW At The Wheels....... (which is low)
RX makes 115 At The Flywheel....

Subaru Driveline will take out about 40-50KW

But I agree there's something wrong with it, I pity the potential buyer, or expect low-ball offers from someone who know's their sh!t.

I'll give you $5K for it.

When I had a B4, I took it to Mercury Motorsport to get some mods done. CAI, intercooler & turbo back exhaust plus a bigger capacity fuel pump then a couple of hours on the Dyno for the base tune followed by a couple of hours on the road (around the g.a. part of Brisbane airport - good long flat roads with few cars about, no speed cameras & no police!) with the tuner in the passenger seat. Apart from the above, engine was otherwise stock. That setup was good for just over 180awkw on a hub dyno with a very conservative boost level but best of all the valley of death that B4's are renowned for was barely noticeable. I sold that car to a mate when I left to live overseas, he drove it to Broome then back to Adelaide, up to Darwin (topped out at a GPS speed of 245km/hr on the Stuart highway which had no speed limit at the time) across to Mt Isa and back down to Brisbane, it never missed a beat and it's still his daily drive today. Apart from a new battery, plugs, filters & oil it's had no other engine work since I sold it & it still runs beautifully.
