Sacrilidge!!! Roof rack on a STi spec B GT

Postby ThirstyAs » Fri Feb 04, 2011 4:02 pm

Decided to get a kayak for fitness, so needed a way of carrying the bloody thing.
Its a 34kg 4.88m sit on top kayak (but has big sealed hatches for stowing gear for trips)

So I needed a roof rack...'
I seen the recent thread on roof racks, so excuse me for "showboating" here
Roof rack is a Rhino Sports rack (rated to hold 60kg), and us awesome gen iv wagon owners dont need to modify anything or drill anything or attach any unsightly brackets. Whole thing is returned to showroom stock in 15minutes since we got the cover in the rails hiding the mounts.
Also it doesnt affect our super large sunroof, all can open even with boat on top - see last couple of pics

Anyways

Except ya gay arse brackets that clip into the door seal which will always leave a mark in the door rubbers
Nah yeah they look alright hey.
With the wagon, it doesnt have any extra brackets, so undo the mounts, lift off, re-insert the factory cover plates... :assassin:

These guys have a heap of gear. http://www.roofracksuperstore.com.au/
I'm sure if they don't have the deflectors in stock they could order them in. Thule ones seem to be about $90USD, not sure how inflated the price will be here in Aus.

I got my Prorack and Thule setup from these guys. Very helpful.

Don't remember seeing the deflectors for sale though...

LOL yeah i noticed that too... its longer than a few run abouts people tow behind their cars.
Ive been loading it a bit more forward lately so it only over hangs the rear bumper by about 700-800mm so i dont think i need to flag it. It looks deceptive cos of the roof line is shorter than the bumper, but yeah in the original shots its probably overhanging about 1200mm from bumper which im not sure, might have been illegal

Cops over here only seem to be worried about if im 5km over the limit rather than my load... if it looks strapped down well enough they leave it alone.
Mind you, did you hear last year when a young fella on a motorbike was following a falcon down mitchell freeway with a dining table on top, the whole roof rack broke off, it fell out to the side and car in other lane swerves to avoid it and knocks poor kid off his bike, almost killed him. He just posted on a local bike forum couple months ago, about 7 or 8 months after the accident that he stood for the first time with out crutches, still a wee way off walking.
My Kayak weighs 34kg, and load limit of rack is 60kg, so im not doing something as stupid here. Ill get a flag when i find one, probably have to go to one of those work/safety stores, repco etc dont sell em strangely.

Just hang a tea towel or something of the likes off of it. It's purpose it to alert people behind that it's there, so all it has to do is move in the wind and stand out from the car/Kayak.
