I've just put in an order for a GT auto wagon, and was wondering if you still need to baby the car before the first service? The last new car I bought was a Mazda SP23, and the dealership told me to drive it like I stole it, so if there are problems they'd be unearthed... but that was a lease car I was intending to get rid of in three years anyway, but I'm intending on keeping the lib.

Standard operation manual suggestion is to not race the engine and keep below 4000rpm for the first 1000miles. Some controversy whether that needs to be adhered to though. I have had dealers tell me ' yeah, while running in make sure you keep the revs below this (and points to the redline) :D '

Intrestingly the new GT does not require a service (at least by the service manual) until 12500 - thats different from my previous expereince with turbo subarus

well then, i though i was the only 1 with warranty issues!!!

i bought the last of the 2009 gen4 wagon brand new list of things replaced so far, i might add the cars only 11mths old now.
-drivers door trim due to top skin collapsing
-centre console for lid skin collapsing
-RHF window reg as banging and cracking on the way down or up
-ignition barrel as shorting out and buzzing when starting the engine
-endless dash rattles
-dash cluster as when sitting on a constant speed for more than 10min the speedo will drop down to 0km/h then sit there until you hit the top of the dash or turn the motor off and start up again
-gear selector as it would shoot out of 1st gear under no load
-rear shockers due to collapsing (if you went over a bump or dip in the road the back of the car would float up and down for another 20metres down the road)
-hazard light switch never worked from day 1, they found the plug was missing in the loom. so new cabin wiring loom!
-radio head unit due to very poor FM reception
-1 key as the buttons never worked
-its also burns over a litre of engine oil every 3,500-5000km which they told me is standard operation if you dont drive the car hard???? WTF...

its going in for a service Friday with the added list to inspect/replace drivers door inner handle falling out of the door trim, dash rattles (again) and to check the front passenge door trim for the inner skin collapsing.

this is the first subi ive ever had, i'm very happy with the way it drives/handles and looks, but unsure if i could look into another after this!

Make sure the engine oil is warm (usually about 5mins after the coolant needle hits half way), then drive it hard:

Bloody hell. I wonder with it being one of the last if it was just a spare parts cobble together rather than a series production item. That list is just crazy. In the USA you'd be able to claim a refund or replacement car under their lemon policy (3 strikes and you're out IIRC)

The car is still not fixed. But the parts have arrived already from Japan. I just haven't find the time to book it in to fix yet.
Other than the small problems the car drives fine.

Some Subaru dealer like my Dealer offers first 5000k service free. but they won't do anything. They just look and drive your car I guess if you go. because told me if I wanted to change the engine oil i would need to pay extra for it.

I am not sure if I want to buy another subaru in the future considering so many problems with the current one.

Where do you live? Perhaps you're surrounded by extremely bumpy roads that would have any car to shudder and creak?

I won't complaint if my car comes with that. I am going to send my car back to warranty repair soon. will report back if this time all problems are solved.

Never heard of Subaru giving a 5,000km service for free.

I know Mazda & Mitsubishi offer the first service (Approx 1000kms) for free as they only check fluid levels & just inspect the car for any dramas etc... Both companies don't suggest you can't the oil, but I made them do it in my old SP23 just to be on the safe side :D Didn't cost much anyway considering I brought my own oil.

Luck of the draw IMO.

I know of people who have bought HSVs & they have never missed a beat. Then again I know people who have boughts HSVs & had roof linings replaced, tail lights replaces etc etc etc... Same with Mazda (My SP23 had all sorts of issues), Mitsubishi, BMW... Most cars these days are just pumped out & you can get one that is perfect, & another that is a lemon.

Lets face it, it's all about maximising profits as opposed to releasing awesome cars these days.

The problem with HSV is it's really a Holden with go fast bits bolted on by HSV. That means design and line issues on regular holdens will affect HSV too. Since HSV is a separate business it was always a screwaround getting stuff fixed on their cars.

Funny thing is that owners expected that they were buying some special marque though and got real upset when stuff didn't work.

Ummm, that's not true mate.

HSVs are actually built to a higher specification then the run of the mill Commodores. This includes using better plastics / materials on the interior etc... Now, this may not have been the case 5-10 years ago, but it is the case these days.

The point was, that things can go pear shaped no matter what car you have... If you want to pick on HSVs, at the end of the day it's a 60k + car. Sure, I personally couldn't justify paying the money for one, but you do expect a certain amount of quality for the money.

On the flip side, you could spend the same money on a VW or BMW & have the same sort of problems... You can't escape from it.

A friend of my old man's has a Ferrari California... A group of them went of a drive day (Porsche GT3, GT2, Lamborgini's, etc) & the 600k Ferrari, which was only 2 months old (& the most expensive car there on the day) was the only car that had any issues... The damn thing actually broke down & had to be towed away.

Doesn't matter if your buying a Kia, Subaru, Toyota, Porsche, Merc or any other brand car you can fathom ... There are some good & some bad... It really is just luck of the draw... Sometimes you just have to keep your fingers crossed when buying a new car.
