B4 Surging

Postby hawks123 » Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:03 pm

Having another problem with the B4 at the moment

Drives fine till about 3500rpm then once changeover starts car will sometimes surge.
If it doesn't surge then power drops as if ECV is opening. But the kick from the secondary never comes on.
Max Psi is between 6 and 10. Lower than normal.
We've tried quite a few things and found nothing.
We have a laptop and are monitoring the ECU live as we drive, but we don't know exactly what to look for, if
anyone does please let me know.

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated

Thanks Guys

very interested to hear what the problem is. I thought I had a similar issue, at part throttle my car somethime jumps at about 4000rpm like i have stood on a cats tail. It only happens sometimes and only on part throttle.

It sounds to be your boost is being disable and may be pinging. Can you log you car?

You may also have a mechanical issue.

I got it back from the mechanic yesterday, but there were a couple of leaks. With them fixed i get another couple of psi.
But there is definetly no change over onto secondary.
And it does seem to be pinging very easily, doesn't even need to be hot.
We can see what ecu is doing live, but what would we look for?

IAM and negative knock correction. There are many others, but those are the 2 basic support ones you will find.

My car is doing the same - it's funny though as it is putting in positive timeing instead of the reverese. We are trying a few things includeing a new AFM if we can get our hands on one, a new knock sensor and maybe an oxygen censor. Will cost me a fortune in sensors but will be cheaper than engine rebuild.

My car is really bad on a slope but fine on the flat!!! go figure.

Well just put the stock top mount cooler back on.
Still having issues.
Flat out in first boost goes to about 10 or 11, at about 5500rpm there is a massive drop in power
and then another kick as if going onto secondary, but by then it's time to change gear.
Pretty much does the same in other gears.

Anyone else had this problem before?

Thats kinda normal to feel the vod. Keeping the first turbo with hardly any boost helps that to disappear when going dual.

We had a laptop hooked up to the car while we were driving. according to the PC there is 2 wastgates (i thought there was only one?) and they were opening and closing under power. This sounds odd to me, but a B4 is an odd car. Is this normal.
Also does wastegate chatter sound a bit like pinging?

The computer said there was 2, but it may of meant something else, i'm not sure of the BOV, i think it works, i'll put my sususususu one on, see what it does. I know my stock one does leak a bit, i just presume it's suppose to do that?

B4 definitely only has ONE wastegate and its on the primary. As u've said, I'd try a known-to-be-working BOV and go from there.

I've put some cylinder head cleaner through a few of the lines, havn't taken the black box off or sprayed a lot into it, but i did get a bit of black come out of one of them. Since then not much has changed.

i know at the moment that the stock BOV leaks a bit, but what would the car do if the spring was stuffed and it had a massive leak.
Theres no leaking noise but it just feels like it doesn't want to changover until very high revs because the boost is usually about 5psi under what it should be.
