Has been a common problem for me, check all your fuel lines in the engine bay. I would bet money that somewhere you have a perished rubber hose either under the manifold or near the fuel regulator. I have pretty much replaced all the rubber fuel hoses in my car since I have had it as it seems the 140k km mark is when they all start perishing!
It doesn't take much fuel to cause a really really strong smell either, the ones that i pulled out were seeping rather than leaking. When the engine bay gets hot, the rubber gets more pliable and seals again so you cant smell fuel anymore.
