Only 4 screws to hold stereo in ok?

Postby rever » Mon Sep 06, 2010 2:25 pm

This morning i took out the stereo to have a look around and just double check all the connections etc etc. Naturally, while screwing in both the top screws my fingers managed to slip (YES TWICE  ) and both top screws slipped off their holes and fell down the sides . I tried to prod my fingers around the centre area but couldnt locate them. I currently therefor only have the bottom 4 screws holding the stereo in place. Is that ok? Or is it necessary i buy another couple of screws?

Shouldn't be a problem it's not structural ;)

I lose and have leftover screws most times pulling apart interiors got a nice collection of spares :)

Haha, glad to hear im not the only one. After the first one slipped i was annoyed, but after the second one went too ouch there was frustation.

Im not really sure where they went, but im assuming they just fell down and underneath the carpet trip on each side. Theres nothing down there that they could damage im assuming?

Get a magnetic telescopic pickup tool. I would be concerned if the sharp threads of the screw got caught between the carpet and a harness or something it might work its way into the wiring via abrasion.

Supercheap auto had a stanley flexible one i paid about $14 for. Its quite long, but it has a narrow tip which is far better than the telescopic ones that have a tip almost as wide as a 5c piece. Magnet still quite strong. I went to toolmart first and they had a cheap $6 telescopic and then a $50 one basically the same

Well i just gave subaru a call and they said that under the carpet trip on both the driver's and passenger's side there is a little bit of cabling but it is all insulated. In all honesty the guy i was speaking to didnt seem to be the most reliable source but he said that a few screws under the carpet trip shouldnt harm anything. Has anyone removed the carpet trim and knows whats around there?

There are cables insulated to varying degrees. Either taped or in conduit.

Telescopic inspection mirror, magnetic tool, and mini jaws grabber tool are all a must-have for working on cars when you drop stuff into into tight areas. Just buy the cheapies from Supercheap they do the job.
