12" Subwoofer/speakers

Hey guys,

Preferablly i am looking for second hand better gear but the possibility of having to buy new gear is becoming increasingly dominant.
Basically i am looking for the best 12" subwoofer and speakers to accompany my 500w 4 chan sony amp with the budget i am putting forward.

12" sub - $200-230
speakers - $100-120

The guy at autobarn was highly recommending some clarion speakers for $120 while claiming that equivalent priced sony speakers were no where near as good. However as far as i knew beforehand clarion is bad quality?

Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

Cheers,
rever

Where are you at??? I have some 2nd hand gear sitting around doing nothing (unless my gf wants it in her car).

I have 2 JL Audio 12w3v3-d2's sitting at home in a sealed box doing nothing.

Both subs in great condition, never run hard and always run with clean power at around 200w RMS each.

If you are in Sydney, I would highly recommend Marty at FHRX. He knows his stuff and will steer you in the right direction, if you are interstate he also ships his gear as well. Just drop him an email. They do great install work and have really good prices on really good gear.

www.fhrxstudios.com

Also, take a look if you already haven't at http://mobileelectronics.com.au/ There is generally alot of decent 2nd hand good gear up for grabs and the guys over there are a big help.

My advice would be to stay away from chain stores as it's my experience that they really don't know what they are talking about.

I agree 100% The guys at autobarn are mostly there just to make money and because they have some vague interest in car audio... not necessarily any knowledge. If you want decent advice on car audio it's best to call in to an independent place, and there are heaps listed at that site posted.

I personally recommend Phatt Audio in Braeside. Talk to Sam. He's a down to earth guy that really knows his car audio, and he's not into simply recommending the most expensive stuff, but rather something that will suit your needs and budget.

Having said that, yes I'd probably say Clarion > Sony anyway. :P but there are a lot of other nicer speakers available.

For $120 you could get yourself a set of entry-level JL Audio coaxials...

Thanks for all the help guys :)

I'll be giving Phatt Audio a call a little later on. As for the JL sub garbo, are you in melbourne?

*Also, when buying subwoofers, do they come boxed? or is the price of the sub excluding the box price?

If you mean box, that the subwoofer comes in an enclosure ready to use, then generally they do not since it would then limit the number of applications it could be used in unless you went to the waste of removing it from the enclosure. You may be able to get a prefabricated enclosure packaged with the subwoofer at a discounted price though.

If you mean whether the subwoofer comes in a cardboard box, then the answer is yes

No am in Sydney mate, still not sure whether I want to sell them (monies are tight after 3 back operations this year) or whether I will stick them in my gf's car.

You can get some subs preboxed, I know Ryda does a JL Audio w1in a preloaded enclosure (ie subs in a subbox). I think it came in a ported box from memory. But if you are going to a specialty store they would probably build a better box closer to the T/S specs of the sub.

Just be aware that a decent custom box will cost $300+ for a sealed 10". Also, if you're getting an off the shelf box, stay the hell away from ported and go with a sealed enclosure for tighter bass.

+1 an off the shelf ported box will never suit the sub perfectly unless it was designed by the manufacturer of the sub. I.e. the prefab boxes from JL etc.

Custom slot ported box FTW! :D

If you are tight for cash don't pay someone to make you a sealed box, even if you don't have the tools all you need is to ask a cabinet maker to cut the individual sides of the box for you out of MDF then you just have to glue and screw it together. Since I didn't have a bench saw (only a jigsaw) when I built my box this is what I did.

Ive got Kicker KS650.2 components up front paired with a Kicker Comp sub running off my alpine amp and that sounds sweet. With the speakers you've got to think that buying speakers in that price range is gonna get speakers capable of 50-75RMS and if ya want quality that will last id recommend the kickers. A bit more pricey but they sound way better. Subwise what i did when buying mine was tested all the subs at the same volume and same song to see which had the best output sound and in my mind the kicker shat all over the pioneers and sony.

Prices:
KS650.2 = $165
Comp Sub = $230
