Mcintosh 04 to Mcintosh 07 upgrade - help?

Postby HODMAN » Thu Nov 12, 2009 8:47 pm

Hi peoples
Ive recently had to upgrade my Mcintosh HU so I got onto a reasonably priced 06-07 Mcintosh HU with the optional AUX input and Mp3 capabilities.
Almost a straight install.
There in starts my challenge. :?
Image
The i85 plug is slightly different. (That means it wont fit) This plug only had 1x green wire from it. Even with the old unit I could not work out what this wire was for. Everything worked fine, with or without it.

The i86 plug fit perfectly. I worked out these wires controlled the Steering wheel controls with the old HU (everything else still worked fine) BUT with the new HU the Wheel controls no longer work.
All other plugs and features work fine including my Clarion ipod control with Clarion aux input. 8)

Does anyone have a cut off i85 & i86 plug they dont want for a 06-07 Mcintosh HU? :?:
I presume this will fix my i85 prob & correct the pin order of i86 OR have I got it all wrong. :?

Sorry for the long winded version, I havent learnt the shorthand yet.
Cheers

Thanks RIC for the ref photo.

Good work on the swap, I was going to do this but the 07 Mcintosh unit I had on hold was no longer mine, so... never ended going down that route.

How did you go with the HVAC, does that fit plug and play as well, or are you now running without climate control?

On the old McIntosh's, pins 3 & 7 used to connect to the steering wheel buttons.
Pin 8 connects to the "BRIGHT" output from the Body Integrated Unit, which forced the illumination to Max even when the headlights were on.

I thought i86 was just for connecting to the OEM Navigation unit.

Ric - would you recommend wiring the illumination lead for my aftermarket headunit to this one? At the moment pressing the bright button doesn't set the headunit back into day mode. Would be very nice if it did though.

HVAC was plug & go.
As far as I can tell it works perfectly.

By playing with the old HU I found i86 controlled my Wheel controls, when unplugged nothing else was affected.

Back to my pin prob... I ve got the original pre-facelift plug, what I dont know is the expected pin arrangement for the facelifted 07 Mac unit.
If they re the same then maybe my new unit is faulty. If they re different then maybe re-arranging the pins might restore my Steering wheel controls. :?:
I would need to know pin position & wire colours (watchout newby at play).
If anyone has cut the plugs off for a 07 HU conversion, I would love to get the plugs with bits of wire. :air_kiss:

If anyone can help that would be appreciated.

Cheers

So do you now have dual zone climate control? :D

ARH :!:
You got me there. After reading your post I remembered about dual zones.
Answer: Left side knob is just a dummy now. Right side knob controls AC as before.

Greg,
I'm puzzled when you say your car's i85 plug is "slightly" different than the socket on the newer HU. Does the socket look like this (the white one with the green outline)?

I can make several of the various plugs. But would you please post some clear pictures of the backs of your old and new HUs. It would be nice to see the fronts too, so I (and others) can recognize those same HUs when we see them in the future (in other cars).

Also, clear, close-up pictures of your car's i85 and i86 harnesses (so I can see the shape of the plugs, as well as the colors and numbers of the wires).

I don't need any of i26 -- I've seen plenty of those already

Hi All,

Sorry to intervene fellows!
Does anybody know if you can use an an additional OEM CeNet compatible CD changer with the McIntosh HU? Maybe with the use of a Clarion CCA 519 adapter?
I'm very new to this Car Audio systems but after spending many hours browsing the web (of course frustrated with the incompatibility of McIntosh system with Mp3 and Aux-in) found few products that may (fingers crossed) work such as this:

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/23841 ... anger.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/20708 ... anger.html

If we could get the CeNet connection working together with these units above, this should make a lot of souls happy!

Looking for advise!!!

Cheers

Sorry for the slow reply, i have been sidetracked for some time.
I will organise some more clearer pics asap(though this could take me several months)
