Need to install a bluetooth in car unit that works with McIntosh. Any suggestions? Also I see there are some that have screens etc for your phone book caller id. Are these any good or jus gimmicky? Any advice appreciated

Just get a standalone handsfree which doesn't interface with the headunit. Much cheaper and easier to install, too. It will have its own speaker.

Firstly, McIntosh integration is very hard and generally has all sorts of compromises.

I have (was in when i bought it so i have no idea on price or where it was installed) a nokia bluetooth kit. Works exteramly well, and even works perfectly with iPhone (and worked perfectly when iPhone wasnt ment to be able to work with car kits haha. Its was magic ) The way its been set up is that it cuts out the CD and GPS when you make/receive a call and resumes in the exact same place again when the call is ended Never had a problem with it!

Wow Wooduck that Nokia one sounds great - I've got a Parrot with a screen ?model number? I'm fairly happy with it, doesn't cut out the stereo which is no problem just smack mute on the wheel

just get a double din kit and get a head unit with built in bluetooth MUCH less dicking around, you can dial from the HU, automatically mutes and resumes when you receive/make a call and looks stealth without ugly addons or wires cluttering up your car

My kit automatically mutes/resumes when you make a call. And as long as your phone has speech recognition (anything more than a $69 pre paid special should these days haha) then you just hold the button and you can voice dial. And no ugly cords really, you cant see the cord that attached to the answer button which sits descretly next to my HU (can supply pics). and the mic (which will be needed for a HU with built in blutooth ANYWAY) sits neatly up near my head with the wire tucked behind the pillar cover

Does it just kill power to the McIntosh while the phone is active (same as turning off the key)?
That could be done very simply by putting a relay in series with the IGN wire to the radio, and is how I wired up my previous car.
(However, I also intercepted the radio speakers with some more relays. Is your's just using its own speaker for the phone?)

You can use any bluetooth kit as long as it has an external speaker output with a 3.5mm jack.

What I did is buy the loom from Subaru spare parts (Part # SU-H6210AG000) that gives you the ability to plug into the auxilury on the McIntosh....This is basically a 3.5mm female jack.
From there I used 3.5mm-3.5mm lead that connected my bluetooth kit to the auxilury on the Mac.

My kit also streams music from my phone via bluetooth so I normally have it on auxilury anyway playing music from my phone.
When the phone rings the music stops and I get the call coming through all the standard car speakers.

if I'm listening to the radio or CD it's just a matter of switching the Mac to AUX and answering the call.

I use the Parrot 3200 (which my audio man installed with my sound gear) with the McIntosh head unit. It mutes the audio (rather than simply cutting the power) and plays through its own speaker (which I located in the useless "centre" speaker space when I changed the speakers). It worked perfectly with my old Nokia phone and now works just as well with my iPhone. I have had no problems with it.

True, if you have MY08 or later (like the original question from scary).
MY06 and earlier Macintosh systems don't have an AUX in, which is why they have the "hard to interface to" reputation.

Yeah mine is 06, so no AUX. But what they did works just as well. It turns it off, but doesnt reset it or anything, and as soon as you can hang up the phone the music is playing again...no lag! And yeah, it goes through the entire speaker system. Works a treat for me=)
