Focus Err on Mac

Postby smythie » Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:24 am

The other week on the run out to Bathurst I caught myself out hitting a really rough dip a bit quick with the CD player going. The player stopped immediately and gave me a "FOCUS Err" message on the display. Turning the Mac off and back on again had no success (was still driving at this stage). Changing discs seemed to get the player working again (had no trouble with am/fm).

I hadn't had any recurrence in the past two weeks until this morning on a road with some relatively small surface joins. Changing discs and back again seemed to clear the fault

I presume this error is trying to tell me the laser has copped a jolt. Can it be fixed? Is it going to be exxy to fix? Should I just let it go until it dies altogether and replace the HU and AV panel?

Will have most likely been due to the bump you had that knocked the laser off it's alignment for a second (they're mounted in a 'floating' state, so they can move around and take a bump and not lose alignment).

Chances are your bump pushed it a bit too far and tripped a sensor, that's all. It would have gone into tprotect mode until you turned it off and let it boot up again (it's just a computer).

I'd not stress it, it's just a safety mechanism (like a fuse) has been tripped and turning it on and off agian would have forced it to do it's reset process.

I'm also a bit concerned about the laser in these units. It appears my McI might just not be liking MP3 cd's in slots 5 and 6, but I've got to do some more testing on this though. Could just be the CD's I've used.

I know others have had that error (I haven't personally) but the quality of the Mac's isn't great... I'm on my 3rd head unit now, which so far has been trouble free.

But, if you've got the cash, I'd go & get yourself a nice AV panel... At least then you're sure of the quality etc.

I know you don't do anything of the cheap Tony... Thus why your looking at that K2 super charger kit ;)
