Which speakers should I go for? Fronts/Rears

Just following cpitts' suggestion here What can you guys recommend to replace the factory speakers? I'm thinkin 6.5" splits in front and 6" coax in rear.

I was originally thinking Alpine Type S, which would come to about $210 for the splits and $150 for the coax.

Any other suggestions? I've been told that Boston does some decent speakers in that price range too, but never heard em before.

I'm thinking I can pick one up for about maybe $430-450 ish. I know I should wait and check for 2nd hands, but my AV panel has arrived and I desperately want to get in some audio this weekend, lol.

In all honesty, take the $210 and $150 and combine then and put it all into a nicer set of front splits. You will get a SERIOUS improvement and not miss having the rears not done.

In about 12mths when the rears are dead as a result of the slightly powered up HU, then replace them with the $100-150 type units.

As for splits sizing, yep, get 6.5" splits, the Lib front doors are WAY big enough, but you'll have to make an MDF mount for them to get them to fit cleanly.

Brand wise:
- MB Quarts
- Focal
- Boston
- Alpine
- Pioneer

All do good sets, with the top ones being deerer in that price range and the bottoms being cheaper, and maybe a little lower on the SQ pecking order. Not sure of exact current models for these, but anything Boston/Focal will get you excellent sound for your money.

Ultimately your source signal is going to cause you more greif than the speaker type, and if you deaden the doors, you'll improve any of them by such a huge amount that it'll be like a free speaker upgrade anyway.

I don't mean to be a smartass (ok so maybe I do ), but realistically, you need to tell us what your budget is before we can recommend speakers.

I mean, I'd LOVE to recommend the MB Quart QSD216 Q-line splits for you, but they're over $2000 a pair...

That doesn't directly specify a hard budget... it gives an indication of what he's looking for, however it doesn't mean that he hasn't looked at the higher end stuff yet.

Waaaaaaay out of my budget, lol. I'm essentially looking at stuff around the price range of the Alpines that I mentioned. Just looking for best bang for buck speakers.

*morel tempo 6 or dotech mkII (another favourite brand)
*hertz HSK165 (great allrounders)
*diamond audio (coming back to australia, and generally excellent too)

boston are definitely good, no probs. but it's worth sampling what you can, cos you may find some of these others better.

Sweet! Thanks for the info! Tho those are all a little bit out of budget at the moment for me. Unless I make do with the factory cones for the moment and save up a bit. Keep in mind that I'm by no means an audiophile. I wouldn't be able to tell the dif between those speakers, but on the flip side, I can definitely recognise bad sound!

I guess the main reason that I'm asking about Boston is cos my mate is a dealer for them and can get them at very reasonable cost.

I've had that feeling recently with the Dyn's.

Well worth remembering that those prices are probably retail pricing.

Haggling is the way to go at the moment, dealers will be glad to move stock at all, so argue a lot and shop around. You should easily be able to knock $100 off a $400 set of splits (or maybe more!)
