Oh dear, more works arrived - DynAudio 3way install

Postby cpitts » Wed Apr 22, 2009 11:17 pm

Looks like a few more busy weekends attending to the front doors now.

Image

I should have a reference item in there for a size compare, those bass units are 8 inch each.

And the install process goes on:

With the door skin off. You can see the wooden mounts required to help position speakers into the factory holes.
Image

And with the door skin back on, it looks like this:

Still gotta do the bass unit and all the cloth trim up but at this stage, it's all coming together well. :D

Dynaudio gear, just LOVE it ! :D

Hope their car audio gear aren't as demanding to drive as their home audio stuff.

Fantastic choice cpitts - Dyn's are the shizzle!! (if you have the bucks)

I dont and settled on Focal's (not in the Lib - in the second car)

Still not cheap

Yeah, these speaks have had some great reviews. Can't wait to set them up and have a listen.

The tweeters will fit perfectly next to the door openner handle (hidden) will need to do some custom re-work of the plastic trim though (break out the scalple)

The mids are a perfect fit into the hole from the mid unit. Take out the plastic trim and the Dyn mesh cover fits perfectly in the hole.

The woofer though . . . . . . . . . . erm . . . . . it's a bit big. I can't even fit the basket into the hole in the door metal. :( So I've got a bit of thinking to do here. To modify the trim will be an exercise and half and completely unreversable.

I think I'll drop in my 17cm woofer from my Alpine DDDrive's that I've got lying around while I figure out how to make up a box to get this big bastard of a thing to fit. In the mean time though, I'm sure it'll drop into the sub-woofer hole in the boot. ;-) Save me making up a sub box this weekend.

I should have most of hte front door install complete this weekend Sentinel.

As for ability to drive them, ye, I'm a bit concerned about that too. The McIntosh amp isn't the best so may well strain to keep up. Will see how it goes, I have an alternate up my sleeve if push comes to shove. Off to the shops again.

Not that I've checked but aren't the crossovers for the door speakers built into the Mac amp? Wont that make your lovely crossovers defunct if you use the Mac

And Yes its fairly gutless amp and Dyn's are thristy. What sensitivity are the splits you have there?

The front doors seem to be full range signal. I pushed Clarion to give me a full breakdown of the x-o network in the McIntosh, but they didn't even know.

The signal that comes into the door goes through the same cable to all 4 speakers and is passively trimmed at the speaker by a capacitor. This is the same setup as been used in Liberty's for years. Mind u, the Mc amp in this setup is a very new variable, I'd imagine only the sub and the front centre speaker would be filtered by some form of HPF or LPF.

The speakers are 92dB sensitivity which is pretty crap on a low powered amps, so we'll see how it goes. They're 3 ways after-all, that's gonna make them harder to start with!

Sounds like you should be right then - arrgh eletrolytics as filters - cheap cheap cheap

You should get a decent upgrade then. 92 is not as bad as I expected tho. I reckon the 8's will be the biggest hurdle. Let us know how it sounds

So did you find a spot for the big woofer out the back after all?

Nah, the sub box was going to be investigated this weekend, but I think these speakers will get in the way. :-)

Meanwhile, back at the front stage . . . . . .

Take 1 Lib GT-B front passenger door trim. Cut out some foam to make room for a Cross Over network:

Image

Then drop in the Cross Over to see if it fits (yay, enough room there):

Image

Take out the door handle trim and cut open a nice big square to fit the tweeter in there to get the cleanest sound possible. You'll need a stanley knife and a very steady hand.

Image

And cut/break off all the back bits so the tweeter will mount flush (or at least not fowl on anything in reality).

Image

EDIT: And this is what the tweet cover looks like finished:

Image

/EDIT

Then put the door panel back together for a bit of a dummy fit. Note that the tweeter is sufficiently good fit for no interference of sound transmission. It'll get recovered with some speaker cloth to make it invisible.
Also note that the 3" mid fits in the stock hole (with trim removed) perfectly! I'll just have to make up a new bit of trim with speaker cloth (not real hard ;) )
