Vibrations and rattles!

Postby drndrn » Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:49 pm

Okay, does anyone know how to stop the parcel shelf/boot lid rattling because of bass from the subwoofer? Although I can't hear it while in the car, I'm sure others and myself can hear it. And it's rather annoying.

I know sound deadenings been suggested, but will this definitely stop it? What about the bootlid where the 2 peices of the boot join, I've thought about using silicon and sealing it all but that'd be silly.

Ideas?

I know it's not the answer you were looking for, but wagons don't have problems with rattly parcel shelves and boot lids.

:D

Sorry, the sedan boys have been getting a bit rowdy and just need reminding they bought an inferior product.

Although this problem won't be plagueing me for much longer as I'm "gutting" my OEM stereo system over the weekend.

I seemed to recall either in this or another forum someone posting that their Subaru service department fixed this problem for them by fitting some felt cushioning material between the subwoofer/parcel shelf lining and the metal of the parcel shelf itself. Does this make sense ?

Actually, I just bought a small roll ( 1m ) of felt cushioning tape with self adhesive backing that's about 4cm wide ( 4mm thick ) at Bunnings for $3.83 for some thing else I'm working on but I'm sure this or something similar may be what you may need to help solve your problem.

Cheers,

Had the same problem myself - a rattle when volume and bass were turned up. When I had my first service, got them to check it out. Subaru said they fixed it but they hadn't. <gripe> Can anyone tell me why they tell you it's fixed when it's so easy for me to check whether it's actually fixed it or not? Did they not test it after their supposed "fix"? </gripe>

So anyhow, I had a go at it. Turns out that the rattle was the plastic hook of the parcel shelf brake light that goes thru the metal shelf into the boot. If I held the plastic away from the metal, it stopped the rattle. So I stuck something that would separate the plastic hook from the metal (initially just some paper wadding) and my issue was solved. So you can try that.

Also, on the other Liberty forum, I remember reading that someone had the same issue, and that turned out to be the plastic covers for the child safety anchors on the parcel shelf hadn't been clipped in properly and that was rattling.

hey mate,

I am going to hit this problem in the future, luckly my installer, knows a few tricks. first I am getting sound proofing put into the boot lid, plus new carpet :)

Also the two parts of the boot that are most likely to start, are of course, a lose number plate, can be fixed by a thin layer of either carpet or sound proofing size of the number plate.

second is the cheap rear wing break light, this will also make a rattling noise along with the rear wing itself, if you tap the rear wing, and I mean only slightly then you can see outside what is causing the problems. if you pad the break light then I would say you will have removed most of the rattling noises of the exterior of the boot.

As for the interior, check cables with plastic pieces, either tape them or above put something in between to lower the noise created, also dont confuse boot rattle and the sound of the subs air pressure push hitting the panels(bad is high pitched i think, good is low pitched rattle), different sound and the second is the sound you want not the first one.

rattling = sounds like really shotty poor job
panels vibrating = good sound, sounds tough.

My flat mates commodore, has 2 kicker comp subs, hold the number plate down and you get the awesome sub rattling the side, with no stupid number plater rattle.

my car will have 2 type-r's so I am going to look at everything possible to get it sounding right.

HA! I have the same problem. i "took it back to Subaru" and they packed the parcel shelf with dampener and then the missus neally backed into a car because you couldn't hear the rear parking sensors. so i "took it back to Subaru", they removed the dampener and the vibration was back... so i, "took it back to Subaru" and they said that they had fixed the problem but all they had done in the end was changed the setting on my stero to remove some of the base. As if i wouldn't notice?

so when i get some time i'll re-pack it myself.

Using Dynamat on the parcel shelf may help... But remember, products like Dynamat are designed to "keep sound in". When I did a full Dynamat install in my Lancer it cut down quite a lot of the sub noise from entering the cabbin - Thus why I use to drive around with the back seats down all the time :P + It gave the amps some extra cooling.

+1 on the number plate potencially causing the most amount of noise... On my Lancer I used a piece of Dynamat to reduce this issue... But I'm sure a thin piece of foam will do the trick :D

How do we go about dynamat-ing to parcel shelf? Just put a layer of it under it in the boot? Because I'm not exactly sure how to get to the parcel shelf.
