Oh yeah, pretty sure... IIRC it works as a power bank, which ain't happening without the 5v you get from OTG. I'll look it up, though

If you’re using an android phone, get the “otg?” app from playstore to confirm otg is native.

But nah, batteries you can just pop out of phones haven't really been a thing for a while... the phone can't be as compact (or pack as many Ah in the same size), and is more fragile when it isn't a solid unit with the battery stuck in, that's why; it isn't just a cynical anti-feature. It was a very good feature though; I'm sure it persists in some of those expensive ruggedised phones.

Last phone I had with a removable battery, I actually dropped in the dunny! Barely hesitated to pull it out (there was piss in there), popped off the back and heard sizzling, yeesh. Got that battery out a moment later to stop the damage happening, and stripped the phone down (there was no way rice or whatever would have cut it), dried it out and found some bits of green shmootz on the mobo here and there (dilute piss would've fucked it up nicely pretty quick smart). Cleaned off the shmootz with some CRC, slapped it back together, crossed my fingers and powered it on. Fuck yeah, removable battery - I'd cut the juice in time.

What's the point of the no-battery mod? Stops the battery from getting hammered? (They prefer to have half a charge, and don't like being constantly topped up.)

Yep especially stopping the battery from overheating and exploding.

Usually involves removing a battery, using a resistor circuit on the charge controller and fine tuning volts to the power supply in place of the battery.

Simplest thing would be to chuck a switch on the +5v line, I guess... bit of a hack, but at least the phone could remain unmodified and continue its role as a spare.

It wouldn't charge through the VAG COM too, I'm guessing; hence the Y cable. Yeah, cause the phone is a host to it.

IKR? Just had a thought - I could get the existing reversing camera screen off the top of the dash, and poke it in behind this setup so the phone's camera can show it, lol...

Hmm, problem is, I'm not sure this 90° USB C to Micro USB adapter cable has enough conductors for OTG... bought a Micro USB OTG adapter to use in the meantime while I wait for that Micro USB OTG Y cable to turn up, and no dice.

It works with a USB C OTG adapter going straight onto the Vagcom, but not via this damn 90° cable. Had a look at the OTG spec on Wiki, and before my eyes glazed over, I realised I might be facing a hassle... dammit. It's not like I can search with "OTG compliant" for an adapter like this; it's a bloody crapshoot. I gather it's kinda baked in to USB C, but you've gotta be lucky Micro USB.
