Why did you stick with the original amp?

If you wanted to do this without cutting up your original parts you could buy another McIntosh HU for relatively cheap (possibly wreckers) and cut the din cable off of it for this project and keep your original headunit in working condition if you ever wanted to put it back. There's also a guy on the forums who makes the adapter for the non din cable wires (power, acc, etc.). So technically this could be done without cutting anything on your car.

I think the misconception some people have made with this is that its meant to be a total improvement to the audio system. I'm well aware that the audio system in the gen 4s is pretty bad in terms of audio quality and ideally I would replace the amp and all speakers to get some decent audio quality. The problem with that is I'm a student who doesn't really have the money for that. I can live with the current audio quality but not having basic features in the McIntosh headunit like bluetooth was a massive issue for me. More controversially, I also am not a huge fan of how the McIntosh looks and much prefer the cleaner look of a good quality screen taking up the space, it makes the car seem a lot more modern.

I’m going a different route for our 2.5i with the silver Clarion? hu.

Jdm 2din nav bezel, Kenwood DMX1025bt double din 6.8” nav receiver featuring 75mm shallow mounting depth, line out into Grom bt3 aux cable into the stock Clarion, stock everything else...

The shallow mount means it fits into the centre vent space without hitting the dash reinforcement...

Luckily I already have the 2din nav bezel...
No doubt Kenwood will release a version for wide 2din that will fit the 200x100mm jdm nav bezel...

The Kenwood is a new, 2019 release, composite video in and out, 800x480 res or so, USB mirroring and Androidauto & CarPlay maybe: basic but capable and affordable!

Paid $50 for the Grom, Kenwood is $350 or so.

Been waiting years for a decent spec, good looking, shallow mount receiver!!!

I like the stock look and can upgrade other items down the track

That would most likely be: sound deadened doors, Soundlabs 6” door speakers, lib door tweeters, and a polk in the stock sub location using a dedicated amp and line converter from eg the rear speakers.

Looks like that will be a good build and that new kenwood you are looking at is very clean. I'll be interested to see how it goes.

I’d been searching for ages, mostly gave up, then saw this unit on a FB lib group post.

Its well on the way to the all screen look I’m after

I'm the new owner of a 2010 Liberty Wagon with the McIntosh premium HU/dvd/satnav system in the car.

What you've just linked/described here sounds like exactly what I'm wanting to put in.

Mainly because Android Auto and CarPlay are natively supported with the appropriate USB cable.

Last time I looked up the Kenwood, it only does Android Auto mirroring.

More research required but the Alpine also looks minimalistic and is only $500 more.

As for my install, it’s Gen4 specific, the jdm 2 din I already have, sourced via SubieSales on FB for $150 ish.
Try them, import monster, jessestreeter, buyee etc for Yahoo.jp items.
I picked up a Grow bt3 via FB for $50
Meaning I just need brackets and the HU to complete the install.

If you have an aux in for your stock HU, the grom becomes redundant, any aux in will work as I’m just using line out on the nav. Various stock HU’s have diy aux in options.

This is just one way to get an aftermarket nav in the car, and my preference for my budget.
More popular is a stock head unit (and or amp replacement) fascia, with appropriate harness, member HarwareBob sells these items.

For a gen5 you’d need to see what fascia kits to suit what format nav’s are available.
I’d say you probably won’t be limited to shallow mount units either.

Probably great value but find the model number of the included head unit and google user reviews.
Chinabay units can be hit or miss as regards reliability.

I’d find one that can host android obdii apps, if it supports torque, it will probably support Btssm using a clear blue casing vagcom with USB A plug. That unit will at least do torque via Elm327... I see it has SWC options too.

Tresidder17 thanks for the post. I found it really easy to follow and my install went really well. I installed a Pioneer AVH-a215bt and the only problem i had was with the steering wheel section on the unit was shaded and wouldn't let me select it.
I had turned the source off like U tube said and still nothing, so a couple of thinking beers and 2 hrs of U tube and I found the cause. The bloody handbrake wire.... Because the unit plays DVDs the unit wants a signal from the handbrake to say the car is stopped, safety feature I guess. so i just earthed out the light green wire on the harness and bingo.. everything's working.

Great write-up. This is a task I will be undertaking in the near future. Is it possible to remove the HVAC controls from this unit, or are they on a single board with the head unit?

From memory, I am pretty sure the hvac controls are separate to the the headunit but they share the same fascia, you probably could cut it in half if you are planning something like that. Just check for yourself though, it isn't too hard to remove the head unit and take a look. Best of luck with your project.

I have a little more detail to add as had to search. When using a standard $5 Jaycar 3.5mm pin and cable the pin assignments are:
For the 3.5 pin wiring, the TIP is input 1, Middle Input 2, Ground is the Base.

Therefore, The tip and the base are used to connect to the analogue side of the plug.

You want to connect the harness ground BASE to the orange/white stripe wire,

and the ‘input 1’ TIP wire to the violet/white stripe wire. You don’t need the ‘input 2’ wire for this vehicle.
