Kenwood DDX7017BT - stock amp

Postby Tresidder17 » Mon Aug 28, 2017 8:10 pm

first off, i know this kind of topic gets spoken about a lot but i just can't seem to find the answers so i need to ask it myself.

I have a MY07 3.0r Spec.B with the McIntosh head unit and everything is stock.

I have ordered a brand new head unit (Kenwood DDX7017BT) as the McIntosh system just doesn't have any of the features i want. I've also ordered the AV Panel Kit with dual zone from AVOjdm.

I understand that the libertys have a stock amp that the headunit outputs to then all the speakers connect to the amp (not directly to the headunit like in most stock setups). I'm not trying to chase the ultimate sound quality or anything ridiculous so i dont wish to change the stock amplifier or speakers (for now anyway).

So essentially, what do i have to do to connect my new headunit into the stock amplifier?

The headunit also comes with some strange compatability with steering wheel controls but im not exactly sure how it works, if any of you have any knowledge it would be great.

I can post photos or answer any questions about the new head unit better once it arrives (hopefully this friday)

thanks, guys

Thanks benny, i found a lot of useful information

I've decided to follow a method similar to gfennessy ( viewtopic.php?f=22&t=12400 ) where he uses the rca output on his headunit and wires into the loom replacing the J101 connector.

I've run into one small technical issue. my headunit has rca output for FL, FR, RL, RR, SWL, SWR so i have two subwoofer outputs and no centre output. i was planning to use the same method of connecting the positive wire from FL and FR speakers to get the centre speaker output but im not sure what to do for the subwoofer as the McIntoch system only takes one subwoofer input and i have two outputs on the headunit.

would it be fine to just use either side subwoofer output and forget about the other one or would this mean i dont get the subwoofer output for one side of the vehicle?
Is there some kind of crossover set up i could use like for the centre speaker?

Thanks

Sub bass is somewhat omnidirectional so stereo isn't really an important aspect.
The stock gtb runs one sub. I think an rca splitter would covert 2x rca pair into 1x rca mono.
Or sub output may be an hu menu option.
The centre speaker is a tiny squauker type thing, I think I even unhooked mine.
You can run it in either mono mode or as a difference channel which is L+ & R+ as the +/- iirc...

okay i think i'll wait until i get my head unit and then try and power it up to see if it has a setting to just use a single sub. if not i will try the rca splitter method.

i was planning on using these sony rca 1 female - 2 male splitters and cutting the female end off so i essentially had male connectors with a short amount of cable to wire into the loom (and use one of these for the splitter for the sub if necessary). I just wanted to check they were the right item for the job before i bought them. i'd like to buy from supercheap auto as i have access to very big discounts from them.

male/male & female/female butt connectors are an option too...

if you mean using butt connectors and cutting them in half to get the rca connectors i need, its probably cheaper to do it that way but i may stick with the rca splitters just as the butt connectors seem a little fiddly to be working with.

The last thing (i hope) that i have to work out is what to do with the three shield/ground wires in the J101 socket that run between the amp and HU. Are they just regular grounds for the amp that i could connect to any part of the chassis or are they something more complex?

gfennessey said he combined the 3 ground wires and the amp remote wire into a single RCA cable (im assuming with the amp remote wire seperate and the ground wires together as one) but he didnt actually specify what he connected the ground wires to

crampy's post spoke about combining the three wires and running them through a ground loop isolator but i didnt full understand it either. viewtopic.php?f=22&t=34342

I'm referring to rca gender changers or extenders...

No idea about the grounds issue, but do research it fully or get an informed opinion.
When I'm stuck I use google image search ;)
As many gen4 interior grounds are known to be variable grounds, eg illumination etc, not to mention the canbus etc...

I've done some searching on what to do with the ground wires. I havent found much but i did find this thread that vaguely mentions it http://www.uklegacy.com/forums/index.ph ... -required/

The second reply (from Jackson90) he says he commoned the grounds and connected them to the ground wire on the head unit. Im thinking this means he also connected the HU ground wire to the ground wire in the car's loom as you normally would with any head unit install in any car. although he does not specify and the pdf he attatched doesn't give much more information.

What Jackson90 says could possibly be the exact same thing as what gfennessey did, however they were both somewhat vague
