McIntosh amplifier problem

Postby daddyfreako1 » Thu May 18, 2017 12:34 pm

Hi
Hoping some smart person can help
I have a 2007 Liberty GT wagon Version 4
I bought it second hand.
The stereo always had a problem when anything over low volume, both front door woofers speakers would start to 'fart'
I assumed the rubber surrounds were knackered (it sounded just like this) and eventually removed the door panel and took one out.

It was undamaged and when I hooked it up to a stereo amp inside it sounded fine t medium volume.
So now I am thinking maybe the amp is a bit broken.

So I started looking on eBay for a 2nd hand replacement. I found a super expensive version4 McIntosh amp at around $750 (eek!!!)
I also found a version 3 amp for about $100.

The pictures look similar so I'm wondering are they the same amp?

So my questions....

1. Do you agree with my diagnosis that it's the amp that is knackered?
2. Are series 3 and series 4 McIntosh amps the same so I could just get the V3 one?
Any other smart ideas on sorting this out?

Thanks for your help

Cheers Charlie
