Replacing Mac with aftermarket Wiring

Postby Bldnut01 » Sun Feb 12, 2017 9:45 am

Ok so what I want to just swap the headunit over and keep the mac amp and speakers for now in my 04 liberty
So do I take the speaker wire out new head unit and splice them in to the amp loom or use the front and rear rca ?

NO
A lot more involved than that.
Most new HU's have amps built in that output lots more than McIntosh.
Better to use this unit and bin factory amp.
Make sure new unit has 6.1 output. Most only have 4.0 or 4.1
Connecting old speaker wires is installers job--- not easy.
ALSO connections needed for steering wheel controls, aerial,
upgraded power cables for HU.Can take 4-6 hours.
THEN if you want to watch DVD's you have to " fool" the handbrake switch.Takes 1 hour
Installing reverse camera takes another 2 hours.
Adds up to a lot of money, but can be done.
If you decide to upgrade I can supply colour codes for door speakers.
Cheers,
Steve.

The problem with the Mac amp (in my 08 gtb anyway) is that its input connection is a special multi pin round screwed on unit. I replaced my HU with a jvc dvd capable unit, tossed the amp altogether. This leaves you with a speaker connector under the pax seat. I got a cable and connector from svxdc (http://ae64.com/), soldered the leads to the jvc output leads, and away we went. Had to remove the pax seat to do this properly. If you use the factory JDM facia from AVO japan, it comes with an adapter cable from Suby to a std coax aerial plug the fits most HU - make sure you get the correct version, for either single zone AC or dual zone. There is a thread of mine from years ago where I did this originally on an 04 Outback, then moved the whole lot to my current car around 2008.
