Steering wheel controls and head unit advise?

I have been gathering parts for a stereo upgrade in my 2005 3.0r spec b and im not sure what headunit to get and how to set up steering wheel controls. The main thing i want is a usb port on the back to hide my ipod in the top cubby. I was looking at the pioneer avhx3800dab and kenwood DDx6015bt and they both say they have steering wheel inputs so do i still need to spend the money on a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 or can i make it work without it. Any advise on SWC or head unit suggestions would be appreciated.
