Custom subwoofer install - Freq problem

Postby agusta » Sun Mar 27, 2016 3:56 pm

Hi guys,

I have a 2003 BP legacy here in nz, with the standard kenwood audio.

I've put an any car link in the dash which works well. Ive put a low level convertor off the rear speaker wires behind the dash to run RCA's to a Kenwood amp under the front seat.
Its only small about 150rms x1 at 4ohm.

I quickly whipped up a fibreglass enclosure to house a cheap fusion 10" sub I had.
The box turned out to be 15L which is the recommended sealed size for the sub, this was a coincidence.

It has standard speakers in it at the moment but i'll probably replace them with some Focals or similar when I sort the bass issue..

THE PROBLEM:
The sub isn't hitting notes as low as should/has
Its very peaky at I'm guessing around 80z
Cant sort this out with any head unit settings / amp settings

IT IS:
Wired Correctly (but ill bypass stereo and plug iPhone direct into amp to see eliminate any stereo/line level convertor prob)
Amp LPF on

Thoughts maybe, box needs to be bigger then recommended? Box to thin? I also have tried putting fabric on the inside to dampen and muffle. No change.

Any help apreesh.

A

Have you experimented with sealing/unsealing the enclosure and or tried a tuned port in it?
Have your tried turning the LPF up, down or off?
Where is the sub crossover if any, set?

Get a tone generator app for your iPhone and play it through your system, it can help with detecting xover points, rattles etc.

Tried the LPF on and off, not enough features to change sub crossover haha

Real good idea with the tone gen app!

From my experience you should look at an ELF type crossover.

See here.

Only way to get good low frequency response from a small sealed enclosure.

Looks like you have all your basis covered. And yes, a ten inch sub doesn't give the same bass as a 12. Looking at your enclosure it seems fine though a 12 to 14Lt box would make a difference both in sound and boot space. I have found in the past that a tube works better for a 8 and 10 inch sub. Don't know why. A small equaliser will definitely help better than a x-oxer as you can set it in the go and I know the brand starsound is pretty good and cheap though there are other good ones.
Hope you get it sorted out

Sealing the enclosure made a positive difference with my setup, stock amp w/ resistor mod, sealed wagon cavity w/ resomat and glued foil, mm840 on a 1" spacer...
