autodroid or timur rom

Postby smutty » Thu Aug 13, 2015 8:27 pm

Hi all.
I've bought a 2012 nexus 7 32gb wifi and all the other bits i need to put it in my 07 legacy.
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to rooting an android device but I'll give it a go.
My main dilema is which is the better rom for the first generation nexus. Timur or Autodroid?
Or are they pretty much the same?

Cheers

They're both built with the express purpose of going into cars. You'll be fine either way. Personally I plumped for Timur's ROM because of the ongoing excellent support and development.
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...

Because it is a Gen1 you are limited to final versions of Android 4.4
I think it is going to come down to preference. Both can be found for free if you are looking. Let me know if you need links I can post at least the Timur's one. He only started charging for the 2013 Kernel.

No you're not - Google still provide full support for the original Nexus 7 "2012" model - you can download the official 5.1.1 Lollipop from here under codename "Nakasi" two thirds down the page, or if you have the 3G version, "Nakasig" under that instead.

There's a few basic steps you need to run through:

  1. Install the Android SDK on your PC so you can update your Nexus 7 from your PC (Linux, Mac or Windows).
  2. Unlock the bootloader on your Nexus 7 (if it's not already unlocked). This will result in your device being automatically wiped clean of user data and returned to a factory state.
  3. Change the power-on flag on the tablet such that it will automatically turn on or come out of standby when power to the USB port is applied.
  4. Update the Android OS to version 5.1.1.
  5. Install TeamWin's Recovery Package (TWRP) which is a replacement Recovery environment with more features than stock.
  6. Install Timur's ROM and services packages via TWRP.
  7. Install SuperSU 2.46 or later via TWRP which will provide root access to your device and allow applications to use your device as root (such as Timur's Services package which needs root access to be able to put the tablet into deep sleep and control things like disabling unwanted RTC alarms that drain battery when your tablet is in standby).
Specific step by step instructions with links to required downloads are provided by Timur or whoever you end up going with, so don't worry about it sounding daunting to do.
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...

Sorry, I meant if you want Timur's on your Gen 1 you are limited to 4.4
It runs a modified CM10 version as a full ROM rather than a Kernel update for the installed version. So while you can update your tablet to 5.1.1 you cannot run Timur's or Autodroid on it.

If you are after Timur's USBROM for Grouper (2012 WiFi) or Tilapia (2012 3G) then you can get them from the links provided here.

Good point - I forgot that the 2012 support had halted.

Smutty, the 2013 model is a much better tablet anyway - I would highly recommend locating one secondhand. You can get them especially cheap if you get the ones with cracked screens and fix them yourself (it's what I did with mine).

Here's one going for $30: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171890536592 and you can get a replacement LCD display plus the touchscreen for $52 here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141504889466

Agreed here. The 2013 version is so much faster. The better screen resolution is also a bonus. I have had both versions.
