I got an easycap off ebay. Its detected as a utv007 chip. I've plugged my factory kenwood reverse camera into it and it actually works. Too easy.

McDoof,

I ordered the one from the link, and (connecting it to my sony z3 with OTG cable for testing) whatever i do, nothing seems to work.
I have tried NTSC, PAL, numbers 1 through 4 for inputs.

I get continual signal loss, or lock up and crash/reboot the z3, but no picture at all.

Is there a way to confirm what chipset is inside? Either using the z3, or a win 7 pc?

Help please

If you have not loaded the drivers it will not work. The drivers are included with Timur's Kernel but you need to load them yourself. If you want this to work on your z3 you will need to be rooted and load up the drivers on that too.
If you have access to the Reddit then you can go here https://www.reddit.com/r/timurskernel/comments/342h3t/v3_betar4_for_android_510_flo_deb/

Otherwise here is the extract from the reddit with the driver installation instruction. The bit in red is what you are after for the stk1160

Easycap drivers - old and new:

Unlike in the previous kernel releases (beta-R1,R2,R3), in this new release, the Easycap drivers are NOT pre-compiled into the kernel. There is no plug&play support. But now there are are two alternatives. You can chose which one you want to use.
The old and the new drivers are, however, available locally in /system/vendor/. There is no need to download the drivers to start using them.
All Easycap drivers are 100% 3rd party. I am only providing binary executable variants (loadable drivers) for your convenience. I'm providing these drivers AS IS. I am not able to fix driver related issues, should there be any.

You need to edit your userinit.sh file (once), to tell the system which Easycap drivers to load. This way you can switch between the old and the new drivers.

To create userinit.sh for the old (legacy), single-file easycap driver:

su
echo "insmod /system/vendor/easycap.ko" > /data/local/userinit.sh
chmod 777 /data/local/userinit.sh

To create userinit.sh for the new easycap stk1160 driver (two kernel modules):

su
echo "insmod /system/vendor/saa7115.ko" > /data/local/userinit.sh
echo "insmod /system/vendor/stk1160.ko" >> /data/local/userinit.sh
chmod 777 /data/local/userinit.sh

The new EasyCap drivers support faster device initialization (cold start).

Thanks for the VERY comprehensive reply.

I just thought the EasyCap viewer software would have loaded the drivers for me when I installed it.

As I haven't got access to the tablet yet (my mate is giving me his and is doing all the techy stuff for me) I just assumed stuff would work.

I have forwarded him a copy of this info so he can have a look at it for me.

I thought the Easycap viewer software was supposed to get around this problem of drivers.
It says that it doesn't need root access.

I might just have to wait until I get hold of the N7 and try it for myself

The viewer software is just that - an interface between the camera driver and the user. If there are no drivers to interpret the data from the camera, then the viewer software becomes useless. It's like asking you to drive a car without a steering wheel.

The selling point of Easycap not needing root access is for other cameras on devices that already have in-built drivers in the provided kernel/OS.

This is for a N7 2012. Or is the same for both '12 and '13 models?

The drivers are there ready to go? You just need to enter the commands to activate them?

In the case of Timur's ROM for the N7 2013, the drivers are included as part of the package - nothing to activate. The 2012 model has to be dealt with manually.

how manual? any help appreciated...

I'm confused cause following this link
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/39717-kernel-module-cm-101-easycap-module/page-48

it says no modules or kernel support?

By manual, I simply mean that you will need to gain root access to your device, copy the drivers over to it and set them up to be available on startup similar to what McDoof posted earlier.

A good place to start will be this discussion thread about the EasyCap on the Nexus 7 2012. I can't be any more specific because while I already had a N7 2012 myself, I quickly discovered that the 2013 has significantly better (ongoing) support, hence why I dropped it and went and bought a 2013 model specifically for my installation.

EDIT: Haha - you posted the same link I did. Good ol' Google. :)

Flat6Estate wrote:I'm confused cause following this link

The Google Play link does seem promising - you could buy it and if it doesn't pan out, you have two hours to request a refund.

The camera hardware support between the first and second gen nexus is quite different. I can only day that the stk1160 works on the second gen models as long as you have loaded your drivers in.

On a more positive note, I did some testing with the camera hooked up to a lab supply for power, and a TV with a yellow AV input. I turned the current limit up on the lab supply to around 3 amps.
I think when the current was limited to 2 amps, it may not have been enough to trigger the camera.

The image from the camera appeared on the TV.

So while it was working, I swapped the TV for the easycap device plugged into the z3, and sure enough it worked when I manually started the app.

This was without loading drivers as suggested.

So I am now back on track. I realise that it should start automatically, but it's definitely better than before.

Camera installed today and video lead run to the front of the car.
Nexus not installed or mounted yet, but just testing the camera, it seems to work fine with the app for me.

Now to find another day to wire in power supply and mount nexus on dash

Good result. What Rom are you running?
I've had this in for a little while now and took the tablet out for some updates the other day. It feels so naked in the car without it.
