Don't get Velcro, get 3M Dual Lock Tape instead - it's Velcro on steroids. See my tablet video for a demo of it.

This is a ghetto tightness build. And I've got strips of Velcro on the shelf at our shop (Newsagency) so I was going to run a couple of hook strips across the cubby door and a couple of loop strips across the back of the hard case. All this for the cost of......nothing. :-D

I think the issue you may run into is that the back of the case is flat and cubby is curved so your contact surface might be quite small making it wobbly. The other issue you may run into is where to run your cables. I have used a hole saw to cut the back of the cubby out for cables to run, so you could do that. Your cubby door will also need to be slightly open I guess to get the cables back into it. I will put some more pics of the build later today. Just have to take some.

Just a few picks of the ghetto install. Sorry they are blurry.
I used a hole saw to cut out a part of the wooden block so I could fit the power supply into it. It is currently powering only the tablet's OTG and the Belkin BT receiver

Different size hole saw to cut out some space at the back of the cubby.

This is the video grabber. I know it isn't pretty but it lives hidden from any sight. I have split the 5V+ on the USB cable and put that through a relay which is triggered by the reverse light, so the video grabber only turns on when I am in reverse. This in turn triggers the vCam application on Timur's Kernel so the reverse camera turns on automatically. Very clever TImur. Using option 1 from here https://timur.mobi/timurs-kernel-n7-2013/auto-rearcam/

The Anycar link is connected to my phone for mobile calls and the Belkin unit is connected via 3.5mm jack into the Anycar Link. I tried a few cables to get decent sound quality and settled on a Belkin cable.
The Anycar links into the CD changer port on the McIntosh system so I can pick up calls from the steering controls.
Image

Last but not least. I have this mobile wifi unit for data to the tablet. I got this because tethering to my phone used the phone battery and it's bad enough as it is.

Looks like you have an effective setup going now! Cable ties can tidy everything up a bit, but as you say, out of sight, out of mind.

It's working almost flawlessly. Some aspects of the beta kernel are still crashing once in a while but not enough to be an issue.
I will cut back my wooden block a bit at some stage just to get the thing a little bit close to the dash. Maybe 1cm or or so.
With the video input there is also about a half second input lag which could be interesting if you back into something and make impact before you see it on the screen.

McDoof,

Is there any reason why you didn't just leave the Easycap device wiring standard rather than adding relays, and just run the standard Easycap Viewer App?

The way I understand it, as soon as the Easycap device detects a video input (when the cam powers up via the reverse lights) it automatically starts the Viewer software on the tablet regardless of what the tablet is doing...

My understanding is the the app works in the same way. It opens when the device is detected not when video input is detected. Maybe I read it wrong. So it was and extra $5 for no new features really. I already had a relay in the garage from a previous project anyway.

Nice setup man!
Definitely on the budget side, but hey, once the block is invisible, you'd never know.
Do like the idea of a tablet in the cubby though, that's probably the next interior project!

I just got my Ebay dc-dc powersupply. I notice that it has 3 screw connectors on the power terminal.

Now for the stupid question of the hour.... I know that IN+ is 12v positive, but do I use OUT+ for ground (or both for the earth)?
Or is the OUT+ a 5v output from the green screw terminal?

Use the in and the Ground terminals. The out is a passthrough from what I can tell.

  • Power from the car goes into the 12v IN.
  • Ground to the car goes into the Ground OUT.
  • The third connector is step-downed voltage OUT (passthrough), so whatever is going to the USB ports is also being output on that terminal, allowing you to connect other equipment that doesn't connect via USB port. For the most part you don't need it, so don't connect anything to it.

Here's how my PSU is hooked up:

Thanks to you both. Thats what I thought as well, but didn't want to blow it up during install.
If the seller had sent some documentation, it would be far clearer though

I have just received my easycap device in the mail.
I bought the suggested one.
my first concern is that (even though the online item description says stk1160), the manual that came with my device is STK1150

As i don't have the tablet with me for testing, will this device still work with the Easycap software? STK1150/STK1160 what are the differences?

Not really sure. Load up the drivers and plug the thing in. See if it is detected. I ordered the one in the link provided and it is STK1160 inside.
