Need some help and suggestion for MY05 3.0R stereo upgrade

Postby adrian325 » Sat Jul 11, 2015 6:13 pm

Hi all,

Recently I have my original Mcintosh HU's CD stack mechanism stuffed up. I had decided to upgrade it to a double din HU but the electrician in car audio shop (Strathfield audios, since I am located in Sydney metro) tell me it's not quite possible to change it. Because I have zero knowledge in this stuff, I have looked in this forum and I think I at least need a fascia kit from overseas. Do I need a new amp to fit the new HU or I can keep the Mcintosh amp? I am thinking if someone here knows an electrician or workshop that would help me out. Much appreciated.

Go speak to FHRX Studios.

Can be done. You can either install new headunit and re-run the speakers to the headunit, bypassing amp and losing sub (not so bad) or you can replace HU and amp at the same time.

Can use a new headunit and the stock amp. Just need the pin designations for the cable between the orig HU and amp, cut into that and connect them to the hi level outputs on the new HU

The pin out details between the standard Mac head unit and Mac amp are in the Factory Service Manual.
If you do not have access to it send me a PM with your email and let me know if it is a pre or post facelift and I can extract the pages and send it to you.
The standard Mac amp does not have a sub woofer input.
It only has Front Right/Front Left/Rear Right/Rear Left inputs and it synthesises its own sub-woofer channel for the sub output.
Hope that helps?

Kinda thread hijack but I'm interested in the wiring info as well. My car ('04 GT wagon) has the McIntosh gear and I want to replace the CD stacker (which can't play anything without skipping horribly, and what even is a CD anyway?) with something useful

(also, hi! forum noob, first post, etc)
