I assume the hub is necessary to run the usb power and reverse camera at the same time.

In FI mode with Timur's Kernel the devices are run from the power that is provided from the OTG Y cable. I am just running a really simple spider hub http://www.digitus.info/en/products/accessories/usb-hubs/r-slim-spider-usb-hub-da-70216 It seems to do the trick.
I have one of these that provides power http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321530483883

I'm running a regular 4-port powered USB 2.0 hub - the flattest/smallest one I could get my hands on so it didn't take up much space behind the dash.

Its power comes from the DC PSU (same as linked by McDoof), not the tablet. In this case, the hub came with its own Y-Cable where the data lines are run to the host device (the tablet) and the power lines are redirected to a second USB connector which connects to the PSU.

would work? Would I still need the OTG Y cable???

Yes, that will work (it's an OTG Y-cable and hub combined into one thing), but you will be powering your devices from the tablet instead of purely the DC PSU only. Not a major drama, but it means that depending on the quality of the cable coming from the DC PSU into that octopus hub and then into the tablet, you might not charge the tablet quite as quickly, or might not stay ahead of the overall power consumption if you were using many high-draw functions at once such as music plus GPS plus wifi.

That said, it also depends on how the octopus hub is cabled. The power lines for each connection might be connected directly to the power-in line rather than the tablet, in which case the tablet only has data lines going to it with no penalties on power consumption.

I bought mine from a shop as I had a couple of bad hubs from eBay, so I chose to pay extra for one that worked. :)

EDIT: Here's a pic of what's behind the tablet in the dash.

Click for full size!

  • The white thing is the USB hub (forgot I had a 7-port hub, thought it was 4).
  • The PSU was relocated from the back of the tablet to the hub due to EMI from the PSU interfering with wifi reception on the tablet. Wifi is now working nicely.
  • The red USB cable is what charges the tablet.
  • The black cable is the uplink cable to the USB hub for connecting to the tablet (data lines only) and the thinner cable coming from it goes to a second USB connector that connects to the PSU (power lines only, that way the PSU runs the hub, not the tablet).
  • The third black USB connection on the PSU runs to my phone to charge it.
  • The right-angled USB connector is a data connection run near the handbrake for connecting third-party devices such as USB sticks or USB devices like joypads - debating where to pop it out, considering putting it inside the centre console cubby rather than directly outside otherwise it'll just gum up with dust.
  • The blue cable is my USB ODB-II reader. originally a Bluetooth unit, I replaced it with a USB version so the readings were more real-time in Torque Pro instead of being delayed a quarter of a second.
  • Power and ground for the PSU is run back past the steering wheel to the fuse box and tapped into the cigarette lighter fuse via a double mini-blade fuse wiretap.

Hyrax,

I dont follow your wiring. Can you clarrify?

The red USB cable is what charges the tablet.
To which connector on the Nexus? The micro usb would be taken up by the hub uplink, so are you using the normal power socket?

The black cable is the uplink cable to the USB hub for connecting to the tablet (data lines only) and the thinner cable coming from it goes to a second USB connector that connects to the PSU (power lines only, that way the PSU runs the hub, not the tablet).
Does the hub have to be a special kind that accepts power to the port, or can any powered hub do this??

The Red USB cable connects to the power-in on the OTG Y-cable going to the tablet (or in my case it's an OTG octopus cable but I'm treating it as a normal Y-cable at the moment).

Any powered hub can be used. Some will have a dedicated power-in port that's normally run by a 5v AC PSU or you have what I have - the data uplink cable has a micro USB connection on one end that connects data and power to the hub and the other end has two USB connectors, one with data-only lines that connects to the USB side of the OTG cable coming from the tablet and a second USB connector that contains only power lines that connects to the PSU. The end result is that the tablet can talk to the hub, but it's not the one powering it.

After a casual 6 month delay i've finally managed to get hold of a fascia for an absolute ripper of a price so this project can finally get off the ground.
