static with aftermarket headunit. gen 4 gt mcintosh system

Postby plattsy » Tue Mar 24, 2015 8:22 am

ive spent a good 20 mins googling, forgive me but i cant find anything specific.

feel free to post up links, call me a fag etc etc.

gents. i have a gen 4 gt 05. mcintosh system with the 13 speakers.

previous owner replaced the headunit rather well from the outside. however, there is a constant static feedback, that stays at the same volume.

sure i can turn the music up and it disappears, but when its low its does my frigging head in.

before i open up a can of worms and go ripping it apart looking for errors, can anyone recommend where to start looking....

on everything.

pretty sure on every input even at 0 its there. it has to be the way they have wired the headunit up to the stock amp.....

Are you sure the stock amp is still being used?

Generally when going aftermarket they will usually just connect the speakers directly to the headunit as it would be much harder to connect to the amp.

I'm thinking more along the lines of grounding issue.

If you'd like I can have a look next week for you. I'm located in Keysborough.

If it's constant I'm going to say it's the Amplifier. Bad earths aren't generally a constant noise in my experience.

I haven't whipped the head unit out yet. But the stock amp is still there.

The sub is working so I'm guessing, some sort of amp is in use. I'm not a complete noob with audio, but I'll pull it out and have a look.

If there's a non standard sub I wonder if the power wire for the extra amp is too close to the rca's on the new amp or McIntosh amp?

The first step should be to get the headunit out and see how its wired. Obviously checking if its coming out as speaker level or rca

I had a similar issue with mine. My logic was the interference is there when the headunit is on but not when its off. If it was interference in the speaker wires it'd always be there whereas when the headunits off the remote wire turns the amp off so the rca signal isn't transmitted anywhere. The one part that doesn't make sense is why the interference volume doesn't go up when the volume does up, mine was the same, i would have thought the signal would get amplified and get louder accordingly. Gain is set very low too so not that either.

alright....

took out the head unit.

fu%*ing profesionals. disgrace. all twisted an taped.

any way the rocket scientist had wired the amp to the speaker output on the headunit.

i cut and soldered on rca's and plugged it all in to the rca sockets on the head unit.

static be gone! hugely increased sound quality also.

modded the amp for gain control on the sub.

new sub just turned up, image dynamics id8 from fhrx studios (thanks marty!) ill install that and dynamat the rear shelf tonight.
