Its an MY04 with the GX-201KE audio set.

The GX-201KE does not have pins for resistive-style SWCs. It does not even have the second 8-pin socket that was added to the OEM head units in later years (both old and later models do have another 8-pin socket for the A/C controls, designated "i88").

So no, you can't simply swap in a new wheel (or swap the audio SWC buttons onto a wheel that already had the shift up/down buttons).

Some 2004 models do have audio SWCs. However, they have a component called a "LAN Module" shown on Subaru's wiring diagrams. The two wires from the SWCs go into the LAN Module, and the module connects to the OEM HU (into the 20-pin expansion bus socket -- the same one that connects to the OEM navigation system). The LAN module obviously translates the resistive SWCs into digital data. You can probably order that as a replacement part (or even grab one from a wrecked Liberty/Outback). It may be more trouble than it's worth, though. See link to the wiring diagrams in this post (kudos to Hotwire), then see the "Audio System" section, "RHD MODEL WITH SATELLITE SWITCH".

I don't know whether your GX-201KE will accept SWC commands from that LAN Module. We'd need to hear confirmation from someone else whose car has the GX-201KE and wheel had factory-fitted SWCs.

You could instead find a GX-204KH and swap that in. Plug-and-play. You'll lose the cassette deck, but gain aux-in capability (and I can provide a harness for that. E-mail me for details).

In answer to previous posts, the GX-204KH model definitely does have provision for direct connection to the audio SWCs, on the same 8-pin socket used for the aux input and night dimness cancellation signal (designated "i85" on USDM cars). As markmd1 pointed out, some AUDM cars lack a segment of the factory wiring between the steering column and that factory 8-pin plug. There's a similar situation in US 2005-2007 Legacys/Outbacks.

[EDITED] As far as I know, all USDM 2008-up models are pre-wired completely between the steering column and the appropriate harness at the OEM HU. Some AUDM models have been confirmed to lack a segment of the SWC wiring.

Incidentally, does anyone know where I can find the wiring diagrams for 2005 and later AUDM Liberty/Outback models? I have the USDM documents, but only a few bits for 2005 and later AUDM models.

Yes. works perfect.
My Radio is GX-201SH, but l GX-201KE works well.

I have this:

The firmware must be "CDC notext"

I'm about to invest into doing this at the same time as installing a GROM Input adaptor, just wondering if it works?

Its an MY04 with the GX-201KE audio set.

Thanks to all who have contributed to these forums, it has helped me install a new aftermarket head unit in my 2004 Outback.

I just wanted to post this here because I couldn't find the images or photos that pointed directly to what I was after and maybe this will help someone else. I had the OEM Kenwood 6CD head unit with steering wheel controls that went through the Lan Module. I found the module under the dash behind the fuse panel and its connector B366 had easy access to the analogue signal wires from the steering wheel. (Page W-121 of the service manual) The Op Connector B228 was very near by which gave me everything I needed from the car in one area, and no need to disassemble the steering wheel.

This photo is the Lan Module which is behind the fuse panel under the drivers side dash. The connector B366 is the white plug hanging down the left side of the photo. I used a couple of wire taps to connect the SWC to my new head unit and cut the wires from the plug to ensure the was no interference in the switch resistor values.

Really really surprised I never found this on these forums. Here is a complete guide on installing SWC on a pre-facelift. It's about $450 to do if you install a spec b wheel. $100 if you already have an auto. And $600-$700 if you buy an aftermarket wheel.

Complete with part #'s:

Finally got round to installing the audio controls on my MY09 Subaru Outback fitted with the GX-204-KH 6 disc CD CHANGER unit.

I was pretty simple to install thanks to the instructions. All the volume and mute controls work however the up and down buttons scan rather than go through my preset radio stations. Also, mode doesn't toggle FM2 but that's less of an issue.

Seeing this thread has reminded me that mine are still sitting in the box in the garage. Haven't got the guts to install myself, and haven't got around to getting someone to do the install.

almost a year later :)
have you managed to install it yet? or would you be willing to sell it to me? saves me from buying it overseas :)

bit late to the game but.. does anyone have an experience with setting the switch controls steering wheel with GX-201KH on pre facelift, non SATNAV ? Is the wiring done up until the wheel column (just not connected to anything) or I'd have to do the wiring myself from the center console (from stereo unit)

thanks!

not yet. on the list of things to do. it's actually migrated from the garage to the back seat of the car, so I've made some progress! :)

Klam did you ever get an answer to this? (I have the same stereo unit)

As an aside, how would I know if the stereo is even compatible? I can't identify a Lan connector or anything. If I post pictures of the back of my head unit, is anyone able to explain whether it's possible? I'm happy to do the wiring etc.

I need to install a new cruise control unit, so if I'm taking the airbag off I might as well kill a few birds with one stone.

Cheers

Alex

Would like to bump this thread again as I am facing the same issue.

Bought a Momo steering wheel with audio controls and the GX-203KE from a wrecked Outback.
Took the car to an audio specialist who said he couldn't find anywhere for the SWC wires to connect to the radio.

Have read SVXdc's replies on both here and legacygt forum
Read an article posted above of the guy who purchased the LAN module part no. 88291. He showed the process of hooking it up but it was in Russian and the google chrome translate feature didn't exactly help.

Would love to know if anyone has bought a Lan module and successfully hooked it up to their radio. And if so, could they write up an english guide?
Cheers. Really want these steering wheel controls to work cause i hate having to take my hand off the wheel to skip to the next song. (I have a GROM BT3 that plays shuffle from my iphone)
The track up and downs buttons on the radio actually tells my iphone to change to the next song, but i sometimes have to look down because my muscle memory forgets where it is. Just really want to be able to control it from the wheel, the fact that the buttons are there and are currently useless is so annoying!

You don't need the LAN module. The GX-204xx models have a white 8-pin socket on the rear. Two pins on that are for the SWC input. Four other pins are for the aux input.

You'll have to sort out how to connect the SWC buttons in the wheel, through the roll connector (AKA clockspring), and to the rear of the HU. That work will probably be very similar to what we discuss in the steering wheel thread by "trabbic" on legacygt.com.

You'll also want to obtain the proper 8-pin plug to fit the HU's socket, like the one at the bottom right on this harness:

See although I have a GX-203-KE unit, mine is from the pre-facelift.
It is a silver faced unit with 6 cd stacker and cassette.
I purchased it from a wrecked outback along with the momo steering wheel.
But it does not have the i85 plug, it only has the heater controls plug
