2004 Liberty GT Mcintosh Headunit Issue

Hi all, have had a bit of a search of the forum for a solution or a bit of advice. And I feel I may be up for a new headunit here.

My issue is my headunit only works intermittently, say in an hours worth of drivingall functions will work for a random 5 minutes but not for the rest of the trip. However the volume control knob (inc on/off push function) works 100% of the time. Is there something I am missing here, or is the unit due for the bin? It seems from what I've read on the forum that it might be worth going for a custom nexus setup rather than buying a replacement unit if it is unfixable.

Any help/information would be appreciated.

First thing I'd be doing would be taking the HU out and visually inspecting the wiring harness, plugs etc. Could be something as simple as a loose pin in a plug, or a wire.
