Scored some 1/2 price Rola roof racks from Subaru Burnie (Tasmania).
Wondering if anyone uses roof racks much and can provide some tips, on protecting the paint etc, that aren't included in the instructions.

I wont be keeping them on all the time as I have a sedan and I dont need people telling me I should have bought an Outback

I have the roof racks that Subaru recommend and they worked fine. I used them on a trip away with a luggage pod (anyone with kids will understand the need for more space). No problems with marking the paintwork. pic below

OK... something I didnt really want to get but need to.
Only a winter thingy for the snowboards, so want ones that can be easily removed.

Whats everyone using?

Aiming to carry about 4 boards, without the need to remove bindings.

I went the Thule from Subaru (not the rola) for the upright bike holder that you can get for it. It also allows for all the Thule attachments ski/snowboard/bike bits to be interchanged. Not as nice looking as the lower profile ones but can fit larger items (and snowboards/skis with bindings) a lot easier. Little bit noisy and will reduce fuel economy a bit.

I got the Thule and some ski holders, BUT!!!

Some of my mate's snowboards don't fit in the racks because of the spacing between the front and back bars (specified in the fitting instructions - 750mm I believe). The bindings on their boards are in the same spot as the roofracks and therefore the ski carriers, so you can't close the arm over the top.

I would recommend AGAINST these types of ski holders for boarders for this reason - maybe some of those fancy holders that mount them vertically?

Forgive my ignorance but what's the reason behind everyone sticking the wiper blades out? Is it to stop the snow from caking up?

So they don't freeze onto the glass, and burn out the wiper motor when you turn it on.
