Aftermarket headunit wiring into MY05 with Macintosh-how?

Postby GTbee » Sat Jan 04, 2014 11:41 am

The CD changer of my 2 din Mactintoss is jammed (common thing of course). Been listening to FM for far too long.

I do have the JDM 2 din facia in preparation for a fancy 2 DIN aftermarket head unit with GPS, DVD, USB, Bluetooth DAB+ etc etc that I plan to buy in the future.

However my dad just upgraded the head unit in his car and we have a spare halfway decent 1 DIN headunit that has USB for iPod (not to mention a functioning CD drive). This unit will be enough for now. It doesn't have an interface for the factory steering wheel controls but again, not a concern.

My question is, how hard is it (for me) to wire up this up, given that the factory setup has the amp under the seat, which I want to totally bypass for simplicity etc as the this aftermarket head unit has an integrated 25x4 amp?

I would prefer to do it myself as it will be a sort of temporary unit (6-12 months?) and I will be paying a professional installer for when I get the fancy unit in the future.

I spliced into the mcintosh amp cable on mine, was a bit of a pain but couldn't justify spending extra cash on a dedicated amplifier at the time.
I decided to do this rather than try and pull the speaker wires from the under seat amp.

At the end of the day, no matter what method you try it's not straight forward with the amp involved. If I was to do it again I'd get myself a suitable amp and plug straight in rather than try and figure out what each wire in the mcintosh harness did (also the wires are very thin so not easy to connect up).

I did this on an 04 model, without a Mcintoss, and an 08 gtb , with Mcintoss. The hard part is the Mc outout is via a multipin din plug (if its the same as my 08 model anyway). I got a cable with correct plug for the speaker connector from svxdc (Dave Carter) on legacygt.org, and all I had to do was lace it under the carpet down to amp location under the pax seat from the new HU. Dont recall if it came with a connector for the new HU's outputs, but with a colour map of the new cable ane the map for the HU, its not hard to wire up. Find Dave on legacygt.org and see if he can help.
As I recall, I got power and aerial connector for the HU in the dash, and speaker lead so I could bypass the amp, but connect to the speaker connector down by the amp. You may also need an adapter from the Suby aerial lead to a more std plug, as the Suby item is a rectangular 2 pin item....was in mine anyway. I still have one of these in the cupboard.

If your new HU only has speaker outs, you MUST bypass the amp, as it will expect pre-amp inputs.

TRY CONTACing dave through http://ae64.com
Also look here for pin outs... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=749402
