Hey all -
I know, you are probably thinking "yeah, it's designed to do that"...
What I want to know is if there is a way to have headlights on, but have the headunit dim according to the lux meter, not the headlight status.
I often drive with headlights on in the daytime, but it makes the GPS unreadable in the daytime.
Any ideas? I'm sure I can disable night mode, but I'd rather I kept it enabled for night driving.

does it have a thumbwheel for dash light dimming?
see what you can do with that.
my gen4 has a notch on teh wheel that keeps all the dash lights on full brightness

Yes it has one of those, and in it's max position, it puts the screen in night mode, which is not what I want.
Sorry, the title to the thread should have said night mode, not dimming.

I've tried playing with this as well... Sucks that it doesn't do it automagically! I've grown accustomed to just switching it manually, as I use the headlights on most mornings, but the sat nav is too dim.

I don't have an answer for you but I'm working on getting something similar working in a gen 4 with an aftermarket head unit. I've been posting about it in here
http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22710The summary is that in the gen 4's there is a green wire called "Night Illumination Dimmer Cancellation" that outputs 12v when the dash dimmer wheel is in the "bright" position. My plan is to use this to disconnect the illumination wire running to the head unit (which is violet in a gen 4). I tried with a relay today which wasn't successful but it could be because I used the wrong type of relay or require a different type of circuit.
If the gen 5 uses a similar system then you could possibly do the same to disconnect the illumination trigger signal to the nav screen.

You can instruct the Sat Nav to stay in day mode regardless of headlight status. I have it in day mode all the time.

I understand this, but I would like it to dim when it is actually night time, not just when I have the headlights on.

I don't understand...
Headlights on.
Dimmer set to max brightness. Instrument cluster and Nav in day mode.
Dimmer one notch off full brightness . Instruments and Nav in night mode...
?

He's looking for this functionality:
Headlights On, Sat-Nav day mode during the day, night mode during the night (with headlights still on.) - Without having to change the brightness manually.
If you have the brightness one notch down, but turn the headlights on, the sat-nav goes into night mode, rather than changing to the actual conditions/brightness outside.
