Audio Guru's, wiring advice needed.

Ok, so I couldn't get the new head unit installed in my 2001 B4, wondering if anyone knows audio wiring and can help me with some advice.

First to explain, i bought an Eonon 2 din head unit, and a 2001-2012 subaru wiring harness (also from Eonon). The Eonon Suby adapter harness does not fit, however Nick on the forum showed me this one, which looks like it will fit:

So i can pick this up from Supercheap auto tomorrow, no probs.

Even though this cable looks like it will ensure i can get power to the head unit and this cable does carry audio, i don't think it will get an audio signal to the amp, there is another cable with a round connector about 8-10mm accross that looks to go to the amp (http://nzlamb.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/ ... formation/ - scroll down to "input connector", the round connector). There is no adapter or plug on the Eonon head unit which can take this. there's 1 plug on the back of the head unit which is a little similar, however i just read it's for digi tv, not audio.
Back of the Eonon head unit:

So without buying a new amp, is there a way to wire in the amp using the APP090 Aerpro? Seems people usually put a new amp in, i'm on a budget and would find this tough to manage, so if possible to get it wired together it would be great, could you splice the line coming from the amp into the cables going into the head unit on the Aerpro cable? The audio i guess you could just replace the cables in Aerpro harness with cables coming from the amp line (round connector - would need a female adapter with wiring to ise), however i think there might be an issue with combining the power signal on the aerpro with the amp power, i think the amp power would need to be controlled by an output from the amp?

This website seems to indicate that you can use the cable coming from the amp to the Macintosh head unit to connect the amp to any brand of head unit, you use the "+" inputs, and connect them to the line outputs of the stereo?

How do you tell which are "line" and which are "speaker" outputs?

I'm a bit of a novice, but happy to learn.

Thanks for any advice.

Your first mistake was buying an eonon unit.

As for wiring the aerpro is the easest way to get your new head unit powered up.

I am un familiar with the audio setup in the gen3 but if it is anything like the gen4, then the best thing to do is get a new amp. Again with the gen4 it is possible to hack up the round cable you speak of to allow RCA's to be attached, but I don't believe it's a simple task.

The last option, which is probably easiest is to re-wire all speakers back to your HU, not sure if you have a sub but if so you'd need to amplify that seperatley.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Zac, looking for specific advice from someone with experience with the Gen 3.

Cheers :)

So on further research, it looks like the following might be a viable solution, appreciate comments if any issues with what I'm suggesting.

1. Aerpro cable for power to head unit.
2. Buy a female round 13 pin connector with wires out to connect to the amp cable at the dash.
3. Buy female RCA connectors with wire to connect to the RCA audio out from the head unit.
4. Connect the front left and right, and rear left and right RCA outputs from the head unit to the corresponding '+' inputs to the amplifier on the wires going into the female 13 pin connector to the amp.
Note: the amp splits signal to the sub, so I don't need a sub signal going out of the head unit, and the crossover for the front splits is managed either at the amp or at the speakers so should be enough.

If this works my last question is, how do I power on and off the sub? Or does it stay on whenever the car is on? If it needs to be turned on and off with the head unit, then I suppose i'll need the signal from the aerpro harness, and not sure how that would work..?

Cheers :)

The subwoofer isn't turned on or off as such, it's the amplifier that requires a remote turn on wire. Generally with an aftermarket head unit loom the blue and white wire is your remote turn on. That wire is connected to 'REM' on the amp.

which in his case as per the wiring diagram in the original post, blue and black, and titled "Power Amplifier Control", that is the wire that connects to the amp and tells it to turn on, and what, somehow, needs to be connected to the stock Subaru amp to control it.

Ok so I can get a power on/off signal to the amp then, I just wire it into pin 5's corresponding wire on the amp cable/13 pin connector to the blue/black no.25 pin on the head unit power and control output cable/harness.

NOTE: in the instructions for the head unit, it says "when the machine is powered on, control signals from externally connected amplifier will go through wire POW-AMP output. If an amplifier is externally connected to this machine, do not connect POW-AMP wire to power supply terminal of amplifier, otherwise it may cause electrical leakage and failure".
Need to figure out what this means exactly and how it relates to the stock amp?

Can anyone shed any light on my wiring idea for the audio channels from head unit to amp, would this work?

I'm going to supercheap and jaycar, will report back if this works out.
Appreciate any further feedback, thanks folks

There is a guy in the states that makes up cables to retrofit stereos and stuff into Subaru's... I cannot think of his name but I think he is on this forum (albeit doesn't visit often)

I would consider him the guru of wiring so he would be the one that could possibly help you out

Will have a search and see what I can find...

EDIT:

Just had a brainwave. He goes by the name of SVXdc. Probably easiest to reach him on legacygt.com or forums.nasioc.com

Thanks, have PM'd SVXdc, luckily he has not opened his PMs as its still in my outbox, I've been able to refine my em ale quite a few times as my understanding of how to tackle this situation improves (I think! eek)

Might have found a 13 din pin connector from a UK eBay seller, I got an aerial cable for the radio from Jaycar, and the Aerpro harness to power the head unit.

Just now need to buy the 13 pin, and get advice if my wiring idea works or not, the buy parts to put it together.

I'm giving up on this, have not found any accounts of where people have successfully wired up a new 13 socket din connector to run to the amp from an unbalanced aftermarket head unit output without having some noise/distortion through the speakers due to electrical interference.

Will hopefully recoup some of the cash spent, and organise for FHRX or someone to install an ipod adapter into the stock head unit, and forget bluetooth handsfree calling completely. Will just use the handsfree on my phone with one of those windscreen suction mount things.
