Stock navigation after macintosh replacement

Very eager for a double din replacement but I was told by one auto electronic that once I pull out the mac system. I might as well pull out the nav screen because it has some kind of handshaking program with the head unit rendering it useless without it. Has any one had any experience with it ? I don't really care about the nav, but the fuel efficiency gauges and other information is quite handy.
