Android Tablet Install

Hi guys

After speaking with Matt the other day I was seeing if I could install
a dvd player in the pocket in between the air vents on a 2005 outback.
I unfortunately hit a massive speed bump as the dvd unit I was using
is way to long and hits the reinforcement bar in the dash.

So had a new idea , as tablets are fairly cheap I thought why not place
a tablet in there instead small it has wifi , facebook and of course
club liberty forum .
anyway cut a long story short ill be using a 7inch tablet connected
to a FM modulator this is the project so far it been cut and ill be filling
and shaping now for paint.

If it all goes good ill offer this setup to anyone who may like a tablet
install.

Hey,

I have also been looking at doing the same thing with an android, but don't think I have the ability to shape the panel so it doesn't look hacked up.

I've done this as a little side project, best mod I've done to the car so far.

The finish on the bezel isn't quite perfect but I'm sorta happy with it for a first attempt.

What'd you use to paint yours Harrybob? Your finish looks better than mine after two attempts

A bit of advice too, leave a gap around the screen as it's pretty hard to touch the corners of the screen when the bezel is right there. My interface is easy to use but when close it and open windows it's very tricky to press the exit button in the top right of the screen with my finger...

If you have the aux in audio jack you could consider the Belkin aircast auto BT adapter for a more reliable audio connection :-)

ill be using a FM modulator but still seeing my options.
The tablet is just a cheap ebay item but most tablets
are around 194/121/10 in size.
You can get a 5 inch tablet but that more like a mobile phone.

What software are you running on that home screen mate? Also what did you use to connect to your audio system? How do you update the tablet with new music etc? Did you hardwire it to a 12v power supply as well?

I think I had about 2 attempts at painting before I found a paint that I was happy with, the paint I used was from Bunnings called the Dulux Spraypak Quick Dry Flat Black.

I'm using the Go Launcher app which allows you to have customised widgets, so each image is a widget that acts as a shortcut to launch an app.

The audio is via the headphone jack to the aux in of the stock system. I did have it via bluetooth previously using the Belkin aircast auto BT adapater as bigBADbenny suggested but I found that having bluetooth on was draining the battery faster then what the tablet could recharge.

Power is via a usb car charger. The tablet wakes and goes to sleep based on power being supplied to the tablet so it wakes when I start the car and goes to sleep when the car is turned off and all of this is done via the app tasker.

To add new music to the tablet I transfer it using wifi when I am at home.

Nice 1 mate. Perfect setup. 1 more question. How did you mount it in there? Fibreglass? Or did you make some brackets?

The vent surround is the one with the cubby so that was cut up and then fibreglassed to the shape in the photo, brackets were then made to hold the tablet in place. The tablet itself is a little too wide so the vent tunnels had to be cut to allow the tablet to fit.
