I looked into the driverless UVC vid/usb cap in the demo link but the price was a little too rich for me.
Then an Easycap (clone?) which didnt work: the drivers are probably iffy or too hard for me to work out.

What has worked for me, for capturing RCA SD to a Mac at least, was an eBay driverless UVC, alas I dont have Android hardware to test it with.
Plug the camera into it, plug it into the Mac (preferably one with no Eyesight or Eyesight disabled and open Quicktime Player>File>New Movie Recording.
If I can find it I'll loan it to anyone interested for Android testing.

From memory its this one:

From this search:
http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_odkw ... e&_sacat=0
I'll confirm when I dig it up :)

Yes, therein lies the problem. The FEBON100 composite capture device will definitely work, but it's a bit pricey for what it is.

bigBADbenny wrote:Then an Easycap (clone?) which didnt work: the drivers are probably iffy or too hard for me to work out.

Easycap can work, but only if you get the right chipset - there's literally about ten different versions of the Easycap, of which only about 50% are supported under Android and it's hit and miss when buying them from FleaBay because the vendor has no idea what chipset he's got. I've already bought two which has put me close to the halfway mark on a FEBON100's cost, and they're both unsupported versions. I can hope that eventually Timur's ROM will eventually incorporate the missing Easycap drivers for the other chipsets.

I could do that right now with a Windows or Linux laptop, but that's not an ideal solution at all. Ditto with installing a mini secondary composite video monitor display (I have a small one for general testing of composite devices).

The search continues...

Indeed: that's why I'd send you both of mine for Android testing :)
The Mac one would be a contender, imho, no s-video plug, no driver CD, actually works (on a mac).

Easiest way to test is to get the hardware ID's to check. I believe Mac has the same command, if not, boot up a Linux Live CD, plug in your USB device and then open a terminal and issue the lsusb command to bring up the hardware and vendor ID's of all detected USB devices (supported or not), eg:

Code: Select all
$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 03eb:8406 Atmel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04ca:7027 Lite-On Technology Corp.
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04ca:7028 Lite-On Technology Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0a5c:21e6 Broadcom Corp. BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 [ThinkPad]
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 8087:0a04 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 05e3:0612 Genesys Logic, Inc.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0bdb:1936 Ericsson Business Mobile Networks BV
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 05e3:0610 Genesys Logic, Inc. 4-port hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
$

So let's say I wanted to find out if the Bluetooth adapter above had support on a given OS but I didn't know who made it or what model it was, I could look up "0a5c:21e6" to find out. In this case the description of the device also conveniently gave us the exact brand and model number of the device, but if it really was unknown, we can now look up the PCI database to find out that 0a5c is the Vendor ID for Broadcom and that 21e6 is the BCM20702 Bluetooth device - you can also throw "0a5c:21e6" into Google and usually get a match there too.

You can compare your Easycap's vendor and hardware ID's to those listed in the Linux Easycap wiki. If it's listed as supported in the kernel with no additional tinkering there, there's a good chance it's supported in Android too. For Android, the STK1160 version of the Easycap is preferred and directly supported by projects like Timur's ROM.

Could people who've got their reverse cam working post a picture of the image on the screen?

I bought what was supposed to be a High Quality Sony CCD one, but the picture is average. The Gen5 has a much better qualuty reverse cam picture. I think it's also the Gen4 screen not being great resolution. But some of the current cameras on ebay are advertised as HD. I highly doubt they actually are, but would be interesting to see other screen image pictures.

Most FleaBay cameras only output 640x480 or 720x576 (SD resolution).

The biggest problem is not so much the resolution, but the fact it's sent over an analogue composite video signal. It just bleeds too much with chroma noise and there's very little you can do about it.

Ah ok. Yeah makes sense. Probably even worse for a wagon like mine (longer run). My camera came from a car audio supply company, so should be semi-decent. But still the same style as most ebay ones, and all the same made in china stuff I guess.

So I plugged the UVC into my Mac Pro, started Quicktime>File>New Movie Recording, the device powered up.
In System Profiler>Hardware>USB:

USB2.0 PC CAMERA:

Product ID: 0x3399
Vendor ID: 0x18ec
Version: 1.00
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: ARKMICRO
Location ID: 0xfd500000 / 12
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 200

Extrapolated ID: 18ec:3399

Googled working with "Webcam and Cheese" but no go on a Rasberry Pi...

The other UVC (with S-Video and a supplied driver CD):

Thanks psy, similar to mine. I couldn't get my phone to focus properly on the screen, so it's not that blurry in real-life. And in the middle of the screen is only the reflection off the towbar (that's not usually there). But apart from that it's not too bad.

Sure. The first picture is taken while crouched down. You can't see the camera from eye level when standing near the car.

Sorry to ask if this has been asked a lot,

i recently grabbed a unit for my wagon that looked pretty much identical to the units a lot of you guys have in the images you show - in fact it looks nearly identical to tom_kaufs.
the supplier (eBay of course) said it should do NTSC and PAL. but im only getting grey flickering video now its all connected.

does anyone have a link for a unit to buy that they know works. im not going to go through the hassle of sending the unit back and screwing around since all the cables have been run and provided its a similar setup for power and a single video RCA cable i'll just swap the unit over if i can find a working one.
Some images for clarity

any shove in the right direction would be awesome.
