Factory head unit removal guides

Postby SVXdc » Mon Apr 09, 2012 8:21 pm

Here are some guides on removing the OEM HU:

SuperMoose's Audio Install **Picture Heavy**

DIY: AUX-IN after mount + Center console removal -Legacy 2008

Subaru's web site has free documents for installing accessories. The ones for satellite radio receivers, subwoofers, and iPod interfaces include the procedure to remove and re-install the stock HU. Find one that covers your model and year. Even though you have the McIntosh, the procedure will be very similar.

On the PF-2824I (note last character is letter "i" not digit 'one'), the SWCs connect via two wires on the 14-pin power harness. On some other models, the SWCs connect via the 8-pin aux harness.

We need to see which you have. (so you're still going to have to pull your HU)

They're both codes I located using this method
Maybe -A is the American model, judging by a quick gglsrch of that code 8)
I looked into it wanting to add reverse camera and BT support...
When you remove the HU you want to do as much as possible to enhance the i/o capabilities of the unit to hand:
Video in/reverse camera, handbrake vid lockout defeat, AUX in, chngr audio w/ BT, iPod & swc support, and that's just for the stocker :D

I don't think there have been any Mc HUs in Legacys/Outbacks in North America since 2004 (the last of the Gen. III here). Starting in 2009, some models have a harman/kardon amplifier and speaker system.

When you remove the HU you want to do as much as possible to enhance the i/o capabilities of the unit to hand:
Video in/reverse camera, handbrake vid lockout defeat, AUX in, chngr audio w/ BT, iPod & swc support ...

The Mc PF-2824I HU won't be capable of video display. Was navigation offered as an option with any of the Mc HUs? The mods for video in, rear camera, and handbrake can be done to the Kenwood satnav models (but those are completely different than the McIntosh).

The system notifies me via e-mail. No need to post an extra reply here.

Right! The Mc HU doesnt have video, apparently (I could be mistaken here) the reverse camera input for the optional sat nav display is on the back of it (!).
I forgot to add Short Shifter install to that to-do list, too... :D

Honored to have SVXdc on board with this solution, possibly the godfather of transcontinental HU tweakage...
