USB mp3 compatibility for MY05 GT

Postby raynman » Thu Mar 08, 2012 12:28 am

I have just bought a MY05 liberty gt to replace my wrx, and am looking at getting some usb connectivity for listening to mp3s. My previous Pioneer head unit had a USB in the front, and I am hoping to get a unit to allow the standard stereo to get connectivity.

I know about the $400ish head unit fascia, but really don't want to pay that much if I can help it.

I have done a search and read all the threads I could find (including both 14 pagers).

All the information is about connecting an ipod or a 3.5mm audio jack into the head units via either a EA1251 or a Xcarlink unit from Sydney. I don't have an ipod of any form, but I have a lot of USB sticks that I have been using in my WRX and find that very useful and convenient.

There is none that I could see about fitting a unit capable of reading mp3s directly from a USB stick that I could see. I may be wrong but I did read a lot of information.

So would anyone have any ideas on integrating a USB stick with mp3 files into the MY05 McIntosh head unit?

The unit itself has nice sound, but the lack of connectivity is frustrating considering it is only 7 years old (considering everyone knew about mp3 technology as napster was over 10 years ago)

BTW - I understand that I am a "newb" on the site, and that "hit the seach button" is the cry of just about every forum on the internet. And I am cool with that. But this is my 3rd turbo subaru, and I have been building and working on rally cars for over 15 years so I know a little bit about cars. But I don't know anything about the MY05 liberty GT McIntosh head units as I have only just picked up the car last night.

You mean a whole new unit (ie aftermarket unit) with USB connectivity, or some device connected to the McIntosh?

For a new unit, there are plenty out there in the market.

For a device that can connects USB to the McIntosh... I'd like to know if such a thing exists too.

A device that connects USB to the McIntosh unit is what I am looking for.

In my old WRX I had a DVD mp3 player with USB stick connectivity which I would use tomorrow except that the cost of fitting it to the liberty is approaching $500 using the headunit I already own.

This will work and you get a phone connection.
http://thecarkitcompany-px.rtrk.com.au/ ... -music-kit
and this, which is what I have.

Advanced Ice easy to connect. Parrot will be $300.00 installation to integrate with Mcintosh.
My Advice, and I’ve been through all the options.
$400.00 Fascia from Phatt and a new double din HU. With GPS if you don’t have GPS as standard.
Mongoose have a new unit out for about $1100 with GPS or there are heaps without GPS for around $500-$700. Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion.

Richard.
Hertz HDP5, Audison BitTen, Crescendo 8.6, Morel Ultimo SC10.
Parrot CK3100 and Advanced Ice I-pod thingy.

The advance Ice device looks the goods. Did you plug it into the 3.5mm jack in the centre console?

Doesn't sound too bad at all - Would it work on the "clarion" unit, in preference to the "kenwood" unit in the newer cars, as I thought the changeover was MY07 (or have I got myself confused on that part?). I do like the combo of AUX/USB/iPod for futureproofing. Do you have to do the whole directory thing like with the Xcarlink units

Also found this from Sydney installers - http://sydneyinstallers.com.au/product_ ... ucts_id=29
No iPod, but a bit cheaper than the other (and seem to have a "if it doesn't work you can return it within reason" policy from I can see)

Has anyone tried this one?

I have it in the glove box which I have an IPod permanently plugged into. Don’t have any music on USB.
I find it works really well and easier for me to change artists/tracks ect.
What pisses me off is that I can’t track up and down through the steering wheel.
I have a brand new Phatt fascia just sitting in my office I’m just waiting for the new Pioneer AVH-P8400BH to hit Aus.

I'm in the same boat. I've had Phat's 2 Din facia in a box for a year now waiting for a decent headunit to come out that ticks all my boxes.

This Pioneer has a detachable face, which is rare for 2 Din's, and so is a big plus for me. If the Aus version gets DAB+ instead of the US HD radio then I am so getting this unit.

Will the "advancedice" work with the MY05 McIntosh head unit? Guessing it is the Clarion variant?
