Hack info is in this thread / post - there is a link to the Outback boys who first documented it.

OK! I just got the "USB adaptor" now, a bit disappointed when I opened the box~~ whata? $360.30 just for a CABLE!!! :angry2: Thought it should be an adaptor (or device) plus a USB cable..... :(

"I told you so"

I understand if you were getting them to install it, because ripping up the dash and trans tunnel can be daunting on a new car, but if you're buying the cable only, it's much cheaper elsewhere b

Done! it took me >3 hours to install the USB and hack the nav last night.....
But I didn't follow the instruction (drill a 20mm hole and cut the mat?! :nono: ), so I did it on my way (better? :-D )

What's so special with the USB cable to warrant the 'supply-ony' $363 asking price, or is it simply Subaru Australia ripping us off?? Surely there are 3rd party alternatives out there, if so, could someone please give me a link.

It seems that the "SAT NAV CABLE HACK" is a 'must have' to get the full functionality out of an iPod while on the move so is there anyone out there who could recommend someone in the Brisbane metro area that would undertake this 'hack' - assuming that Subaru wouldn't entertain doing this as part of their $418 fitted price option for the USB cable.

Cheers,

From the product image on the first link, the plug on the headunit side is male:

But what I found from the one bought from Subaru is female on the headunit side...

Also I found this reply on the FAQ on the second link:
"Unfortunately we don't have anything for Subaru at present"

Ill do some google-fu when I get home. I'm sure you can find a third party knockoff somewhere.

"Speakafreaka",

I saw your earlier post on this topic and have even downloaded the web page in rediness to show someone when I find that person to do the install/nav hack, but "Harlequin" had earlier recommended I go for a USB cable rather than a straight out iPod cable so that I'm not limited to just an iPod device. Do you think the Audio Discounters would have a Subaru/McIntosh - USB cable equivalent, at a fraction of the cost?

I'll have a look. That link was uncovered with a quick search, so I'm sure there's others floating about.

It should be a standard connector for clarion headunits (mcintosh is just rebranded)? Is that right guys?

I don't think it is standard connector for Clarion, unfortunately I didn't take a photo of the connector when I was installing it...
but it is a very special female connector that I've never seen before.... (correct me if I'm wrong)

Finally got the new car last Tuesday, so before I splash out $300 odd on a Subaru iPod cable, that probably only cost a couple of dollars to make, are we sure that the female head-end connector is unique to Subaru and not available 'after-market'.

Appreciate your advice.

As there seemed to be some confusion as to the details of the iPod cable head-unit connector I thought I'd post a couple of photos I took last week prior to the cable being installed.

Yes, I ended up paying $326.96 (supply-only) from my local Subaru dealer (Toowong, Qld) for this connector + a length of wire + a standard iPod connector on the other end! Total rip-off!!
