Hi guys,

Just purchased myself a new double din HU. Just waiting on the arrival of my double din panel set. One questions though, can anyone recommend buying an aftermarket harness to plug my existing wires in? And do I need a converter for my antenna plug? Will it fit as it is?

The antenna converter will be shipped with the fascia kit (provided you are getting the one from JapanParts or PHAT)

In terms of a harness, just go to your local Autobarn and pickup the Aerpro Subaru one. Forgot the model number, but theres I think two different ones available for late model Subaru's.

Make sure you get the right one, and if not, just confirm with the guy that if its the wrong one if you can come back and exchange it for the other one.

I'll try and find a part number for it.

Once you get this harness, you need to cut off the ISO plugs and solder the wires to the wires of the JVC plug. (The colours should match up as they are standard now).

Yea, I'm awaiting the arrival of my fascia kit from PHAT. Should have it hopefully within a week or so. I've found two harnesses - CHSU2A and CHSU5A so just got to work out which one suits. Thanks for your advice.

If you have the steering wheel audio controls, then get one of the two that you mentioned (I think the CHSU2A is suited to the Liberty but double check).

If you don't have the steering wheel controls, then all you need is the AP2001 harness.

The two that you mentioned are to allow the use of the steering wheel controls.

Are you saying that one can use steering wheel controls on other HU than the std (Mcintoss) just be harness selection? Surely the HU would have to remote control enabled? I have pulled my Mcintoss (with steering wheel controls), and replaced it with a JVC DV6105, and a std harness adapter......Using steering wheel controls doesnt come naturally to me, so I dont miss it really.

What the harness that the OP quoted does is it has a small box that takes the signal from the steering wheel remote and converts them into a signal that can be read by most HU's now (I think there is a standard among all after market headunits now but don't quote me on this). Then from the small black box on that harness, there is either a 3.5mm jack that pairs up with the steering remote control input on the back of the headunit. Alternatively some headunits just have a wire coming out for steering wheel controls and this box might also output via a wire in which case the two would be soldered together.

Eitherway, I never used steering wheel controls, mainly because I never had them, but I seem to find that my left hand is hardly ever on the steering wheel as its relaxing on the centre console or changing gears.

hey guys,

just wanted to know if the head unit fitted the panel set. i read on some other forums that the subaru panel was slightly narrower than standard dimensions?

my 6-disc changer crapped itself and is displaying an error 99 so i'm just researching what i should do if subaru decide to charge me heaps for a repair.

I'm running an Alpine IVA-W502E headunit. Full double din, 7" touch screen. Had no problems fitting into the mounting slot of the fascia kit. Perfect fit, didn't even need the trim ring.

I think what you were reading about was the top mount panel set(where the satnav is on the Liberty's equipped with them). I think that's a 6.5" mounting hole. But don't quote me on that.

Will post up pictures later tonight if I get a chance.

The AV panel set that PHAT supplies fits my HU just perfectly. Fiddled a bit to get it all aligned perfectly but looks real neat. If you need the dimensions of the cutout let me know, I can measure it up & give them to you. I test fitted a few different models once I got my new panel & out of the 4 there were minimal gaps

would you care to give any thoughts on the head unit? is it responsive? are there any dead spots on the screen? is the gps any good?

called up subaru glen waverley and they said it'd cost $135 removal/refit + $80 inspection quote from the car audio guys, before they actually do anything with the head unit. cost of a full replacement was $3000+. this upgrade is looking like a must do thing if i want my music. that or the local car audio guys can unjam my stacker for a song.

thanks for the clarification mihai. how is the alpine? i'm pretty sure i wont go all out on audio gear so are there any other head units you'd recommend? i would prefer a touchscreen and nav if possible. budget is something along $700-800.

Yea its real neat. The HU is great mate, it doesn't have bluetooth but that doesn't bother me - I can't justify paying an extra $200 for integrated bluetooth. No deadspots on the screen & its pretty responsive/sensitive. The GPS is amazing - I couldn't manage to get my GPS antenna to the top of the dash so i just hid it in on top of my steering column inside the dash & the signal is great. The model I have is the JVC KW-AVX736NAV - purchased from Sound Master for $699 including the navigation kit.

I probably wouldn't bother with the stock HU - it has a cassette deck for gods sake lol the main feature I like with the aftermarket units is the iPod integration. If you need any more advice or have any more questions just ask mate.

The Alpine is a great headunit. The clarity of the screen is unbelievable. And the possibilities of addon's is endless. Only downside to the Alpine units is that they do not come cheap ($1899 RRP - however you can find them 2nd hand for around the $800 mark on eBay) and that in order to have the nav also, you need to buy the separate nav module which connects to the head unit (about $800 RRP and quite hard to come by 2nd hand).

For the $699 that Lib_seanmau5 paid for his JVC + nav, that's actually a pretty good deal, however I cannot comment on the quality of the JVC head unit in terms of sound quality, screen quality, file playback etc.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with Subaru. For the $200 removal/refit and inspection, you are half way to a fascia kit. Add $300 for a mid level single din non-dvd head unit and you will straight away have better quality and louder music than the stock head unit could ever provide.
