To which connector on the Nexus? The micro usb would be taken up by the hub uplink, so are you using the normal power socket?
The Red USB cable connects to the power-in on the
OTG Y-cable going to the tablet (or in my case it's an
OTG octopus cable but I'm treating it as a normal Y-cable at the moment).

Any powered hub can be used. Some will have a dedicated power-in port that's normally run by a 5v AC PSU or you have what I have - the data uplink cable has a micro USB connection on one end that connects data and power to the hub and the other end has two USB connectors, one with data-only lines that connects to the USB side of the OTG cable coming from the tablet and a second USB connector that contains only power lines that connects to the PSU. The end result is that the tablet can talk to the hub, but it's not the one powering it.
