I pretty much got a bezel with the cubby, removed the cubby and using a dremel cut out remaining centre bits so all that I was left with was an empty space.

Then using some balsa wood I created the side, bottom and top panels to be able to place the tablet further back and having it sitting upright instead of angled towards the sunroof, I wrapped the balsa wood panels in foil and taped it to the bezel creating a mould for the fibreglass.

Once the first layer of fibreglass went down I popped the balso wood off and then using either more fibreglass and bog I sanding it to the exact shape I wanted.

The nexus 7 is wider then the space between the two vents so I had to cut slots into vents on both sides. Initially the tablet was mounted via brackets that was holding the tablet on the bottom and back and pushing it against the bezel but I found that over large bumps it would move. So now I have put double sided tape on the edges of the bezel where it meets the screen and this is stuck to the tablet screen which has a matte screen protector.

Hope this helps.

Modifying bezels takes more time and patience than I have. I ordered the 7" AV panel set from Japan.

Given I don't have as much extra space as you gen4 guys, mine sits where the head unit was, and audio is via bluetooth or aux in to a head unit I mounted under the passenger seat. What are you doing for volume adjustment?

@Harrybob, are you having issues with discharging at all? My tablet is losing ~5-10% overnight, and the weak charging current of the 12V battery means a 20min commute is not really enough to recoup this loss. The screen goes off and it goes into aeroplane mode at night.

I initially had issues with charging as I was having the screen in full brightness mode and having bluetooth on all the time, the tablet would use more power then what it was being supplied even with a 2.1amp usb car charger.

Since then I have changed a setting so it dims the screen when not in use but returns to full brightness when you touch the screen and have also got audio to go via aux rather then bluetooth, with this setup I have managed to maintain power at 100%.

Sorry I don't have a guide for my install, didnt take any pictures along the way but it pretty much is what krosbow did with his guide.

Ok good idea re: the screen. I initially used aux for the audio but had an annoying alternator whine. I probably need to pull the dash out again but I was a bit sick of constantly taking it in and out so will put it off for a bit haha

With the charging I found out my cable wasnt chunky enough, I removed the extension cable with great results. I also have mine set to shut down after a period of time. With the wine, grab a ground loop isolater, fixed mine up quick smart.

Yeah I was thinking I might have to set mine to turn off instead of just locking itself. Ground loop isolator did not fix the issue, it was the first thing I tried. :(

Y'all doin' it wrong!

Firstly, you'll need at least 3A to invoke AC charging (Check Settings > Battery to see if you're USB or AC charging) and counter the drain of having screen always on, GPS and wifi on etc etc. To achieve this, you'll need a quality USB cable that's not too long. 24AWG USB cable is recommended. If you're using a cigarette lighter adapter to get your require amperage. A lot of people going through this seem to recommend the Rocketfish branded one. For those hard wiring with a 12v-5v DC-DC converter, the cheap ones on Ebay most likely won't cut it.

For anyone using a Nexus 7, you really should have a look at Timur's USB-ROM (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/37755-timurs-kernel-usb-rom-usb-host-power-management-usb-audio/) as it has solutions to a lot of the common hurdles including getting the tablet to deep sleep. Even has landscape oriented UI (no more turning your head for the settings menu!).

This really helped me to picture it (for some reason I didn't see krosbows pictures on my phone) looking forward to when I can start this project, end product looks great!

this is perfect!

a great couple of threads with examples linked off of that page. i was still deciding which way to go with a custom HU, and I think I've found it.
My '01 Liberty really only has an area in the stereo section, and I have found some double din casings from www.mo-co-so.com which I'm looking at.
I need to get some measurements done to see if i can relatively easily mount a Nexus 7 in.

so you do ;)

I'm still learning all the different models of Lib's here, sometimes it's hard to know if it's a similar setup to my car lol.

just so much information gathering and project ideas at the moment. just found bluetooth ODB2 interfaces which i can then sync to a nexus tablet in the car for real time info (hopefully the gen 3's have a ODB2 port, still need to check).

the project will keep me busy that's for sure!

They have an OBD port but they use the SSM protocol to send the information, I haven't had any luck trying to get torque to read my data :(
