I've got a good idea...buy the harness off gambit who is parting his car out.

OK, so Steve has sent me a bunch of pictures, and things are as I thought they might be:

* His 14-pin power harness lacks the 2 SWC wires.
* There is no 8-pin harness (which on other models has the 2 SWC wires)
* No sign of the SWC wires behind the HU

We can add two wires/pins to the empty slots on the 14-pin harness to connect into the Mc HU. No problem there.

So the next step is to find a place to tap into the SWC wires coming from the wheel. Since the SWC button backlights work, I'm betting that the wires for the SWCs themselves do leave the clockspring and travel down the steering column. That would be one place to tap them. But I'm hoping they go somewhere a little more accessible.

Does anyone have (or have a link to) the AUDM wiring diagrams that cover Steve's 2008? I already have the USDM diagrams, which tell me some useful things about the wires at the steering column. But I'd really like to see details on how they connect from there to the 2008 AUDM McIntosh HU. I'd also need to see the sections towards the end that show locations of the various harness looms and connectors.

I spent the last couple of hours searching here, and found an older AUDM set, plus a 2007 set that appears to be the same as USDM. 4am here, so I'll have to stop for now.

Here are some pictures...

The 14-pin power harness in Steve's 2008 Liberty with McIntosh:

The wire colours and positions match those shown in my pin-out table:

Legacy/Liberty/Outback 14-pin radio harness pin-out

The McIntosh HU has no speaker outputs at the HU (so no speaker wires on this harness). The Green wire at pin 2 is for night dimness cancellation ("bright" mode).

Similar 14-pin harness in a Liberty/Outback w/ McIntosh that was factory-fitted with audio steering wheel controls (SWCs):

The SWCs are on pins 3 and 9, and are the standard colours used across several years (Violet/White and Orange/White). The white stripe is not visible on the violet wire. The silver dots are not mentioned in the wire diagrams.

Steve sent me this -- Subaru's wiring diagram page showing the SWC connections from the wheel to the 14-pin harness:

We need to find where harnesses B36 / i1 are located in your car. These connectors have 28 pin positions, with a cross-section shaped like the drawing at the bottom of the PDF. The diagram is viewing the pins-side of plug i1 (so the layout will be the same when viewing the wires on the back of B36).

See if the 2 SWC wires go into socket B36 (on pins 5 and 6). It's very unlikely that plug i1 has those wires (since the drawing doesn't show any intermediate point they could terminate before plug i26, the 14-pin radio power harness).
