My In-Dash Nexus 7 Project

Stereos, amps, phone kits, Navi...

More so because the sound quality and volume is superior when connected via USB (with an external DAC) than via the headphone jack. Also if charging is possible with the OTG y-cable, you will only need 1 plug so this is ideal for removable set ups like mine:
download/file.php?id=11763
download/file.php?id=11765

I don't know whether the app will allow for simultaneous audio from other apps (eg. Nav) to work on the internal speaker while music is playing via the USB. Will test today.

Ok I tested the set up in my car, with pretty good results

Played music for about 1hr - battery drain with the UCA202 appears to be just over 10% per hour on my Nexus 7 2nd gen (2013) with no charge, which I think is reasonable.

Sound quality is waaaaay better - especially with the bass frequencies which saw a 100% increase (previously I set bass +3 for radio/CD/aux 3.5mm jack, and +4 or +5 for bluetooth - now 0 has ample bass) - it actually sounds like there's a sub in the car now with the stock McIntosh system and sub! :D I was thinking of doing the amp gain mod but now no need

volume levels have increased about 20% - 30vol is now pretty loud (previously, I'd set to low-mid 30s on radio/CD/aux 3.5mm jack for loud music, and up to 40vol [max] for Bluetooth)

And Timbo, in answer to your questiojn, music will play via the USB out and navigation, etc sounds work via the internal speaker simultaneously. Of course, you wouldn't be able to hear it if the music vol was over 15-20.

Obviously the USB audio out only works in the USB Audio Player PRO app - so not Tunein, Spotify, etc - but this is still a huge advancement for Android car sound to my mind.

Will update to advise whether the Nexus will charge with an OTG y-cable when I receive in about a week. And then the next step is to buy a cheap wireless charging pad to test in the centre console compartment, although I'm not very confident about the signal transferring through the plastic compartment lid and Nexus cover.

What is everyone using for power supplies? I was thinking about buying the minibox one, but its fairly pricey...Do you have faith in the cheap ebay ones?

Statts, who started this thread, is using a Mini-Box DCDC-USB Power Supply - see pg1 of this thread.

You could theoretically use an inverter like this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MI5127
It's a much cheaper option than the above, but it doesn't really make sense to go from DC - AC - DC, and I doubt the reliability.

I use a cig --> 3.1A USB adaptor which cost me less than $20. Best / cheapest option in my view.

Depends what you're running - eg. if you plan to plug in a HDD, USB DAC, etc you may need the Mini-box

I only plan to plug in a USB DAC, and maybe a USB STICK/SD CARD..might go cheapy, and if I have issue, get the mini-box solution...

If you're mounting a USB DAC and external storage then definitely go for a more reliable power source.

Hi Team,

Have been reading through as I'm considering hard-wiring a dash cam.
I was looking at using this sort of thing: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-x-12V-Add- ... 565c49167f
But I keep going around in circles as my head can't compute the step from 12v out of fuse box to 5v USB that the dash cam cable was used.

Is it a matter of needing to hard-wire something like this to step down to 5V?
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dual-Port-US ... 1c3508c5a4

I think if I do that she'll be right - any inputs appreciated

EDIT: I think I found my solutuion: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-to-5V-3A ... 5d4639c374 ??

mmm, but I don't need to access it ever, so might as well just use an in-line one? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-to-5V ... 9c3&_uhb=1

Yep! I didn't think to actually check the prices I just assumed that by size/technology the dc-dc would be more expensive.
I'll have to buy you a coffee :D
