My In-Dash Nexus 7 Project

Imho it's not a reverse gear issue to activate the camera.
The camera is switched on via reverse lamp power w/ any body earth.

The issue is to get Tasker to switch on the uvc video app when the signal goes live, when the camera is turned on.
And to ensure that that can happen whilst the tablet is being charged via USB.

I'd imagine it could all work via a powered USB hub and USB gender changers if required.
I have a mini USB hub that has a seperate input for a plug pack (probably 5v 1amp) that Ill use to attempt this.
I want to use a Nexus 7 as an external monitor for shooting video and also as described above, in the studio tethered. :)

OK, but where do you get the UVC video app? And will this work on unrooted devices (or those, like me, who have the Nexus 7 2nd gen which won't run Timur's ROM)?
I can't find this app and beginning to think it's a unicorn

EDIT: Did find this: http://www.infinitegra.co.jp/en/solutio ... onfirm.htm
But not compatible with Nexus 7 2nd gen - won't even install on tablet from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... .usbcamera
Installs to phone though. Will check compatibility with my logitech 720P USB webcam tonight.

Here's one working on a mac... the UVC grabber is simply a USB video source so any app that records or captures video should work?

From the video Hyrax embedded:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGZg-3xg2iw
If you look at it in youtube, this is the description:

"App with built-in chmod 666 /dev/video0 from http://droidperception.wordpress.com
UVC Video Grabber from http://www.sunriase.com/"

Info here as well: http://febon.blogspot.com/2012/02/1.html

"ASUS Google NEXUS 7

UVC Grabber card works on NEXUS 7

Before use, Please do the root and follow two step

Hey Benny, cheers for your reply, but a few concerns remain:

1. First two links are the same, and the issue here is getting video onto an Android tablet - not a Mac or PC
2. "App with built-in chmod 666 /dev/video0" - this requires a different ROM / rooted version if I'm not mistaken? The point is to get video working on an unrooted device.
3. The FEBON USB video grabber runs at 640x480 which is a shite resolution. I wonder if others with better resolution would work the same - eg. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Easy-CAP-USB ... 27dba1b4b9

Surely there must be a way to easily get a 720P reversing camera setup on a non-rooted/modified/hacked/disassembled Android tablet?

FYI, I received confirmation that the app for the devices mentioned earlier is "iSee PCam" https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... tant&hl=en
Maybe someone with a wifi/IP camera could try this?

Has anyone here been able to get the Febon 100 working on their nexus using usbrom?

From what i've read on xda, it should be plug and play, but no luck for me so far.

EDIT: All of a sudden working fine.

I'm interested in doing this project, but the functionality of needing to switch to AUX for GPS audio annoys me a little.
If I want to listen to the radio or CD in the car, without using Tuned In or other solutions, I would still love to be able to hear GPS instructions.

I know that Android is customizable, so I was wondering if anyone knows a way to be able to force out GPS instructions through the tablet's on board speaker, and any other audio through the USB solution.

This way you could listen to the radio or Mcintosh cd stacker as normal, OR play electronically stored music on HDD, key or tablet using the USB method - using the AUX in/CD changer solution of the car, but all GPS navigation instructions are still heard through the tablet speaker.

I reckon this would make a more complete solution where everything works together

Hi Timbo
I'm far from an Android expert, but my opinion is that on an unrooted device that is not possible; rooted - maybe but I doubt it.
Most people who have done the install listen to music via the tablet (eg. Spotify, TuneIn radio or locally-stored MP3/FLAC files), and when playing any audio on the tablet and using the GPS, the GPS software automatically pauses all other audio, provides the driving direction, and then resumes playing. It works pretty well.
Hope that helps

Thanks Monkey.
Upon some further googling I came across an app in the PlayStore called Soundabout. With a quick look, it appears it may do the task I'm asking about.
I'm going to do some further digging around.

I just downloaded and had a quick play (hoping that it might be the answer to the USB audio out "holy grail" for unrooted devices - no luck :( )
I may be wrong, but I think this app only allows you to reroute audio for (1) calls and (2) apps; but not between apps themselves (?)

Don't you think it will be extremely hard to hear over the other audio?

Edit: It's on Tasker's ToDo list: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/todo.html

actions with audio output: option to use audio focus http://developer.android.com/training/m ... focus.html

And this I guess..

Or plug a better active speaker into the headphone jack of the tablet and route the TTS audio to that instead. Remember that we are using a USB solution for other audio, and it looks like Soundabout can seperately route TTS elsewhere.

This active speaker could be hidden under the dash somewhere with a volume control.
Even if the Nav instructions started with a loud enough "DING" from the tablet speaker, and you glanced at the screen to see the instructions, it would be better than no noise at all.

If I did go down this path, I'd use an offline paid GPS such as Sygic. Simply because I don't get 3G/4G data every I go. No point having GPS when you go bush and there is no data to route you.

I guess my goal would be to have something that looked close to factory spec, with better functionality for FAR less money than the $3k that subaru wanted from the factory.

SOLVED! USB AUDIO OUT FROM AN ANDROID DEVICE WITHOUT ROOTING!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... oplayerpro
Released on Google Play only 2 days ago

Interface is nothing special, but it works!!! I'm using a UCA202 with Nexus 7 2nd gen (2013)

Not sure whether it will allow simultaneous charging with an OTG y-cable (somehow I doubt it - although the new Nexus has wireless charging and pads are now down to $20) as I'm currently awaiting delivery of mine. If anyone has one of these cables, lives near Chadstone, and wants to test PM me. Yet to test in the car to see if there's any significant sound improvement. Will update tomorrow.

You may need to uncheck "software volume control" under settings - this is ticked as default and caused horrible distortion at first.

Excited!

without going back through the thread, what was the reason for needing USB audio out?
