Oh dear, more works arrived - DynAudio 3way install

Stereos, amps, phone kits, Navi...

Yes but it prompts me to make the comments on this topis that the Mac amp may not have the juice.

It really doesn't power the Eclipse effectively either and its one of the most efficient 12's around. Compared to running it off my MRVF400 there is no comparison.

Still far better than running that sh!tty 8" short throw driver that is mounted in the rear quarter

I would have to agree Boxer. I would think that Craig has got this nailed for sure though - he would have sorted this out yonks ago.

My sub has no issue with being driven efficiently by the Mac amp - can't remember the specs of it but I recall thinking damn that's low so it work's very well. Some of the boys on the recent Melbourne cruise can attest to that.

I can't wait till Craig's is finished and have a listen - it'll make mine and no doubt most of Melbourne's GT-B's / STi's sound ordinary!

If yours is ported enclosure then that would go some way to making it easier to power on a small amp.

Mine being sealed makes it harder to drive, but for me personally I much prefer sealed subs to increase damping factor and provide tight bass without muddiness or booming that can be attributed to some ported enclosures (not saying yours would be but sometimes it happens).

Downside is for a sealed enclosure it needs to be larger.

I too am interested in seeing craigs final product

Patience young ones, patience.

And yes, with the McIntosh amp, this setup isn't going to be competing in any SPL comps, nor will it drive massive bass.

I'm after clarity, stage, transparency and an invisible install, hence speakers are going into factory (non ideal) locations and are being installed in SQ compromised ways (eg: the sub). My goal is for the best solution possible given the factory location, and history has shown, that you can get pretty damn good results, even with that setup if you put in a little time and effort.

btw, lost ~80% of today, so little or no install done just a bit of trial fit-up. I do know the x-over gap I made works a treat tho! (sorry, no update pics. Perhaps tomorrow. :-) )

Long time since I've been reffered to as 'young' (or patronised as the case may be :P )

Patience - a virtue seldom found in women, never in a man who mods cars!!!

 I've done a supplies run, got a gut full of food, so I'm up for an arvo of fitout.

Should be easy to get the passenger door done today. It's the guinea pig. :P All the prep works been done so it's just lining up speakers with door trim at the moment. Won't get the speaker cloth tidy-up work done today though. That's a time and steady hand exercise.

Anyway, back to it.

Well, just an update, bit of an average day today between the absolutely fowl weather and the complexity of the mounts to be constructed to fit tight into the exact holes of the trim.

I managed to get the x-over fitted up and stuck in place (with velcro and an underside foam brace) and also mount up the tweeter for a perfectly clean fit. Very happy with the location and direction of the tweeter and initial listening shows good promise.

What I did find is that it appears that the door speakers MUST go through some sort of band pass. I initially stole signal from one of the speaker connectors and couldn't get any noise out of the new speakers. Clamped onto signal from the bass unit and are now getting full range audio!! The wiring diagram for the car doesn't show any form of McIntosh band pass/filtering/X-Over so perhaps there's just no power going to some of the speakers in the door?!?!?

ANyway, here's some snaps from today. The signal tap from the bass speaker connector is temporary until I'm happy with the mount up, as is the cable tidy with a bit of gaffa. The final shot of the tweeter is with the door trim fully clicked back into place, so with a bit of cloth over it, it'll be invisible, and the surround foam won't be seen.

interesting I have often thought there was sfa going on from some of the door speakers

don't spose you have a scope or at least an ac meter to throw across the terminals ?

Exhitbit A (from my MY05 WRX)

Exhibit B (as above with cloth)

Less high frequency supression than the plastic cover. Mind u, I ultimately left them off as I was just too fussy with the sound from the tweets.

I only have a volt meter, which isn't really gonna help with AC flow. Mind you, it should show the digi counter move away from 0v with volume applied. I'm just working on the premis that I hooked up the Dyn x-over to the plug that the top in-door tweeter was connected to (not the one next to the window) and there was no sound coming out of the Dyn tweet. I can only assume that:
A - That speaker has a band pass outside that of the Dyn's band pass for the tweet (really unlikely, I should have still got hiss at least)
B - There's no signal coming into that cable (a bit more likely)

I also noted that the wire pair going into the plug was Voilet + Green, not Voilet + white as it was for the bass and mid-bass units, which is where I ultimately clamped Version 1 signal from. Next step is to use my speaker cable and steal signal at the amp itself.

Driving in with the new tweet in and XO in place, you can hear the much greater detail which is more than I expected just yet. Can't wait to get back and have a go at the mid. Maybe tonight, but then again, don't want to push my luck too much. :P

Oh, and I can hear the hiss loud and clear now. Must be the amp, only rated at 0.05THD up to 15KHz and 65dB separation

cool, good work!

Does your volt meter not have an AC setting ?

I wonder since the wiring coloring is different for the tweets - if there is some x-o action in the mac amp as previously suggested ??
