I bought an adaptor out of Japan which plugs into the back of the stereo where a cd changer would plug in. An ipod (or any device with 3.5mm stereo jack) will then plug into the adaptor and play through the stereo when the cd stacker is selected.

I don't have a link (didn't save any) but I found it by google searching for ipod adaptors to Gen IV Legacy.

I had a go at surching for the cable and nothing came up to do with the cable. Any other suggestions you can think of?

Email Subaru asking for a part number (include your Vin# in the email) for the Aux cable/adaptor then Google that
to see what it looks like and if there is a cheaper alternative out there...

Subaru sell them but the price is $125, bit steep...

That is a lot less than what I paid for my adaptor. Mine is a box which plugs into the CD changer port on the rear of the radio. It must have complex electronics inside as the radio needs to "see" a changer to work.

if it has an AUX button on the head unit, it can be done easily - otherwise, easier to change the headunit to something that natively supports ipod/iphone

I will have to have a look to see if it has that plug. I was hoping to keep it stock. Im not that good with stereos. Unless you can plug a Mcintosh system straight in?

Hey mate, you won't be able to plug the McIntosh unit straight in with out some extensive cabling work. Installing a new head unit is quite simple. I see you are in Penrith, I live in Emu Heights, if you decide to go down the after market head unit route I am happy to give you a hand with the installation. It is literally a 45min - 1hr job.
