wagon 8 inch subwoofer replacement

Postby blacktop™ » Mon Nov 01, 2010 1:56 pm

hi guys,

done a search but didn't really find anything relevant....

basically i want to know if you've replaced the stock 8 inch sub with another 8 inch sub in you WAGON.

im just looking for options as most good 8 inch subs are a bit too deep to mount.

cheers

Pioneer used to make 8inch shallow subs which were actually pretty damn good, but you have to amp them correctly to get the best performance out of them.

A few years ago when I was looking, they were going for around $200, with a matching D Class amp going for around the same price.

Vibe make a beautiful 8'' woofer... Digital Designs make a pretty decent woofer, however it needs a lot of power (500w RMS from memory) and a big enclosure to get the best out of it.
Car(s): Steel Silver MY10 GT Wagon + 1985 Subaru Sherpa

Mods: (GT) HKS Panel Filter. The HKS I put in the MY10 is the same filter I took out of my MY05 GT. So yes, they do fit. Custom leather heel pad to minimise carpet wear in the drivers footwell. Slotted front rotors. (Sherpa) 14'' 6 Spoke mags, Chrome Gear Shift (sick!), Alloy Pedals (sicker!), new positive and negative battery terminals, Alpine cda-9827 H/U, JBL GT 6x9's boxed and mounted (sickest!), Kicker DS650.2 component speakers mounted in the footwells in flibreglass pods, Alpine MRP-F200 4 channel amp (4x40wRMS), Rebadged with hektik chrome eBay badges, STi stickers for more powaaaa, "leather" handbrake boot, recarpetted with grey/black car carpet from Bunnings, sick Clarke Rubber boot mat, polished and waxed.

Yeah the vibe space 8 is absolute borderline. It possibly wont fit. I sort of need something with a max mounting depth of 100mm

Not too sure on on that DD one...that's a lot of power lol and the enclosure isn't that big on the wagon.

Marty from fhrx recommended an image dynamics 8 inch sub that I'm currently looking at but I think that that is deeper than the vibe space 8

can you add a spacer to bring the woofer out a bit to increase your depth??? any advice marty gives you regarding speakers is good advice, he is a freak of nature when it comes to car audio

marty also doesnt actually stock vibe gear anymore cos hes not happy with the quality of their stuff. he said glue was failing on the subs and stuff like that and it wasnt just a one off so he decided against selling vibe.

yeah a spacer is an option but then i would prob have to start hacking away at the plastic behind the standard sub grill...

105 is prob max depth allowed. thats with a spacer.

Hope this has been recent regarding the glue on the vibe gear.

I do not want to pull apart my parcel shelf to take the sub out.

Plus I don't want to lose the bass from my car!

I think it is only recently it's started happening mihai. I heard something similar on MEA. If anything does happen I'm sure marty would be more than happy to help you out.

Im sure Marty would help me out, but its still a pain in the ass to remove the sub and then drive around for days/weeks without bass.

For the small amount of space you have, from all the research I did years ago, the Pioneer is the best option over all... Now if you were going to build a larger inclosure in that area (Fibre glass it in or something) that opens up a whole heap more options :D

no no no just looking for something to fit in the stock hole :D

heres the comparison between the pioneer shallow sub, a kenwood one that looks good and the polk audio that hamish recommended...

i think the polk audio looks best with the higher excursion...cos lets face it an 8 inch sub is never pump that loud. and i think the kenwood would come second but it costs a fair bit more.

what do you guys think?

I had a look at the kenwoods when i was looking at buying my sub. The problem is (and I dont remember if it applies to the kenwood or not) is that you need a free air sub. One that requires a box would sound crap.

Just something to ask when you do make a decision.
