Single DIN an option with 2003 MY04 Liberty Luxury?

Postby tch » Sun Jun 28, 2009 10:05 am

I'm considering getting a car PC put into my 2003 MY04 Liberty (Luxury - with 6 CD stacker). I see a lot of people using the double DIN face plates to fit after-market head units in.

Are single DIN units possible? Also, what anti-theft options do people put in? I saw on a forum a while ago someone pasted a plastic snapshot of the standard Liberty 6 CD stacker, but that's a bit extreme!! Even something where you can slide some plastic over the screen or something would be good (like the plastic that slides over the cup holders)!

Single din is possible, just get a 1 din cubby or a plate to cover the hole.

I havn't really heard of any anti-theft methods apart from getting HU's with detachable faces. If you were to cover the HU with material of some sort, I'd say it would produce the opposite effect and raise a red flag with the thieves that says 'Look here, I'm covering something of value'.. I'm not so aware of the statistics, but I can't imagine OEM headunits/Sat navs are stolen that often? I think it would be harder to offload these than aftermarket units.. My double din screen looks quite OEM so I rely on that fact to prevent thieves from taking it.. it helps me sleep at night lol but my logic might be a little misguided. That and I try not to park in shady places.

Thanks for that.

Not often, I'd imagine too, hence the plastic picture the OEM head idea (overkill IMO).I'm asking all this as I have the option of a single DIN or double DIN car PC. He thinks a single DIN unit where the monitor folds in when powered down would be the best choice. I guess you're both right in that would be better than a plastic slider that would suggest something valuable is behind it!

A car PC sounds pretty schmick and I think the single DIN where the TFT screen slides away sounds like the option that would be less likely to attract unwanted attention.

If you were installing a typical audio head unit, I would recommend for additional security that you either pick one that has a detachable face or one that has a security PIN that renders the unit inoperable once power is dis-connected.

If you end up going down the single DIN route, you can fill in the space with either a single DIN free box, multi-disc holder or a cubby insert.

Don't forget to post some pics after you get this car PC installed :D

Dan,
Yeh, would be interested in selling it if it happens. Just to confirm it's the 6 CD stacker. Will let you know if I decide to go ahead with it. Going to check out a few samples of this guy's work tmrw before I go ahead with it.

Main reason for getting one is that I've done my research and I want on-the-fly playlists with mp3s off the HD/USB stick (without an Ipod, which I can't believe do those anyhow?) along with Bluetooth, GPS, radio all built in. The playlist feature can't be done, but to get all the other features in a BRAND after-market unit costs way more to begin with, and they're also less future proof. The car PC can do plenty of other things the after-market units can't do but these are what I want it to do mainly. My only fear is the quality of the sound, but the Luxury sound set-up isn't anything special to begin with.

Yeh, as long the bloke can get the car PC in to begin with! He reckons he can just going by a pic of the dash.
