Stereo Advice - 2004 Liberty GT - Mcintosh Stereo

Postby menace » Wed Sep 11, 2013 2:06 pm

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum and I am looking for some advice on how to go about sorting out a "Focus Error" i have on my McIntosh head unit (Subaru Liberty GT 2004). I was wondering if you can point me in the right direction as to where i can get this repaired at a reasonable price? I have been quoted in excess of $500 for a swap out unit - which i believe is over priced.
My understanding is that all i need to do is replace the internal stacker - does anyone know where i can simply order one ?

I am also aware that it is possible to replace the head unit completely with an Aftermarket Double Din system. I had a look on eBay for a fascia kit and they are going for $568 which includes the air con module. Do i need the Air Con module? From the way it appears and the various photos i have seen on the internet, i thought you could separate the module from the head unit. Which means all i would need is the top piece with the double din cut out. Where can i get a simple fascia plate for the liberty?

Thanks in Advance,

Menace

Try eBay for 2nd hand replacement headunits, problem is their condition is unknown.

Aftermarket headunit is a good way to go for a better sounding stereo. Though it becomes a snowball effect from there on. Keep in mind you will have to install a separate amp in place of the existing stock amp to make everything work. Then you'll want new speakers & sub, etc

As for the fascia anything over $450 is a complete rip off. Speak to Michael from Garage88 in Sydney who can supply one for ~$400. And no you can't just buy the fascia separate to the HVAC, unfortunately.

Yo,
yeah as above. Starts with the double din kit expense, then snow-balls if you go aftermarket.
I actually have a brand new double din kit that i want to sell because the thought of doing the rest makes me sad.
350 + the cost of a post pack if you want it and we haven't scared you.

Cheers for the info zch91. I'll look into Garage88 and see what they can offer.

meownerator - Haven't been scared off completely yet. However the more i am digging into this stereo issue the more i realize its going to be an expensive repair.
It's my first day of research and I'm weighing up my options. I'll be in touch if i decide to go with an aftermarket option. I don't really want to mess with the light colour scheme in the car, its one of the features i really like - leaning towards standard repair so i can retain the original look.
