head unit too wide for your dash's DIN slot? (GEN 3)

Postby arthsz » Fri Apr 04, 2014 9:37 pm

hey there

I've noticed over the internet that there are a lot of confused subaru owners in regards to them buying a new head unit (Single DIN) and it is too wide for the dash.

I remember I bought a Pioneer MVH (I forget the model number) and the nosepiece was 180mm wide and the dash was only 170mm wide.
I know this has happened to plenty of us and we start to freak out about not being able to find the right head unit to fit your car.

OKAY SO

Alpine have all the answers with their CDE range:

http://www.alpine.com.au/showProduct.php?pid=16

If you go through them, I'll think you will find down under the "Features & Specifications" tab that in fact,
Most of them have a:
•178mm wide and 50mm high chassis
•170mm wide and 46mm high nosepiece
(most of them)

*by nosepiece it is the part of the unit that sits out and flush with your dash.

see the photo I replied below, it shows an Alpine CDE-123E in a Gen 3 Subaru liberty/outback (not sure) sitting PERFECTLY where the factory clarion DRX6275GV.

there also may be other manufacturers that have units with these dimensions but I haven't bothered to look that far.

I just find it a bit shit that only some head units are small enough to go in the dash.
thank god for alpine.
if you would like to add anything please do, as this post is just to help anyone best from my research and whatever.

I hope I helped a little :D

and another note,
I didn't do any heat shrinking or soldering to get mine connected.
I used a Subaru liberty 1998-2003 ISO loom harness which connected to an Alpine ISO harness which went into the unit.
no electrical work for me!
works amazing.
